Meghan McCain disagrees with some of the latest comments and actions by Sen. Lindsey Graham, but she just can’t “talk crap” about him.
McCain told her co-hosts on “The View” Monday that she couldn’t join them in bashing the South Carolina Republican because she has known him since she was a child and he is like “family.”

The discussion had been focused on Graham’s recent interaction with an Iraq War veteran who approached him with criticism about President Donald Trump and the senator’s support for him.
Whoopi Goldberg seemed to struggle with addressing Graham’s behavior after a video clip of the exchange.
“Was — did he think that — what do you think happened? Did he just — what was — what?” she sputtered.
“He’s thinking, ‘Oh my God. He’s going to get me to talk against Trump! Oh my God. I won’t be able to win the election! Trump will be mean to me, and I’ll have to go back to doing whatever I did before I became a senator. Oh my God,” Joy Behar declared. “That’s what he was thinking.”
Co-host Abby Huntsman interjected that Graham is “a savvy enough politician.”
“At least let the guy finish what he was saying. Or respond to him. Maybe that was a moment of weakness,” she added. “Lindsey Graham could at least come out now and say I apologize for doing that. What I don’t like seeing is people losing their humanity, losing who they are, because of Trump.”
McCain tried to give some perspective about the scenario.
“I have been in situations like that in the Senate hall or the Congressional halls and there’s always people trying to make news with cameras,” she said.
“It happened, like, I can remember Code Pink one time, like, storming my dad’s office and you never really know,” she added, referring to her father, the late Sen. John McCain who was a longtime friend of Graham’s.
“Lindsey is really hard for me to talk about in public because I have had to reconcile his politics right now are very different than mine, but I have known the man since I was ten and I love him very much,” McCain told her co-hosts.
“So it’s hard for me, and again, that’s the best part about being on ‘The View’ is I don’t have to pretend to be a journalist, and I know he’s currently fighting with Joe Biden right now, and it’s literally like watching family members go after each other, and I think Trump years do weird things to people,” she continued.
“I don’t condone what he did, but I get it. If a veteran did it, they could probably do whatever they want to me, I don’t know. I don’t love it, but I can’t talk crap about him. I’m sorry,” she said.
“You don’t have to talk crap about him,” Goldberg responded. “One could say, you know, you have got to be a little more respectful to the vets. You just do.”
“He was in the Air Force 33 years. So yes,” McCain agreed, noting Graham’s military service and continuing to defend him as a “good person.”
She was slammed on social media for her comments and followed up with a tweet defending herself and calling on the critics to “stop judging me about it.”
“I literally grew up with @LindseyGrahamSC who I have always considered an uncle. We never have agreed on everything, and do not now. I refuse to let politics destroy my personal relationships across the board. I love him very much and always will,” she tweeted.

Comedian Chelsea Handler responded to McCain’s tweet, telling her that the 64-year-old Senate Judiciary Committee chairman is a different person since the death of his colleague who passed away at age 81 after a battle with brain cancer in August 2018.
I hear what you are saying, but Lindsey graham seemed to be one person before your dad died, and another person now. There seems to be a big chasm between what could be considered honorable behavior to what is clearly now blackmailed behavior.

Twitter users continued to debate McCain’s comments and her decision to stay out of the verbal attacks on Graham.
I’ll take that as a compliment coming from the guy who is most famous for calling Jerry Sandusky “a chaste pedophile”. https://t.co/c7i7pP4Py5

That’s pretty harsh. If I heard right she did not support Lindsey Graham’s positions or attitude. I have relatives that I love but do not agree at all wuth their attitude. Leave her alone

She’s publicly argued against Sen Graham’s position on this a number of times. Ms McCain is simply refusing to end her personal relationship with him because of it. This is how good people are supposed to act.

Supporting a long term family friend is a crime? How incredibly intolerant. You can disagree with friends politically and yet still love them personally. I would argue that is one of the purest American ideals. Or at least the America I love.

It makes sense why she can be asked her opinion of him, it doesn’t make sense why she should be attacked because of it. Yes Mr. Graham has become a horrid disappointment to this country. But all Ms. McCain can do (if she wants) is tell him she disagrees. She can’t change him.

You can’t win. You say something and people will be all over you because you know him. You don’t say something and people are all over you because it’s your job.
