Democrats doomed if Mitch McConnell holds impeachment trial amid Iowa caucuses

Democrats and their media minions are apparently terrified that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell could schedule President Trump’s impeachment trial for January.

If so, that would disrupt Democratic presidential candidates’ ability to campaign in the run-up to the crucial Iowa Democratic Caucuses, which kick off Feb. 3. All senators — including presidential candidates Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker, and Kamala Harris — are required to attend the trial.

Sean Trende, the senior elections analyst at Real Clear Politics, tweeted: “It’s gonna be lit when McConnell schedules a six-week Senate impeachment trial that all Senators are required to attend, silently, starting a week before Iowa.”

One woman on Twitter quipped: “I don’t think the Democrats have thought this all the way through.”

Another Twitter user remarked: “Gonna be wild watching Bernie actually do his job.”

McConnell’s enigmatic “Mona Lisa smile” says it all.

In addition to the inconvenient timing of the impeachment trial (for Democrats), the Republican-led Senate could call witnesses like Hunter Biden to testify.

Hunter’s damning testimony about his dad, former Vice President Joe Biden, could sink the entire Democratic Party just as the election cycle kicks into high gear.

Losing control of their anti-Trump narrative is not something the Democrats want during an election year.

At this point, it’s almost a foregone conclusion that the Democrat-led House of Representatives will vote to impeach President Trump by the end of this year.

If so, the Senate must hold an impeachment trial. This works to Trump’s advantage because the Senate is controlled by Republicans.

“Once it comes over here, it’s in our lap,” said Republican Senator Kevin Cramer. “We talk about those things and snicker about it: the possibility of it playing out that way, where we’re literally in the middle of voting and senators would be stranded here for six days a week.”

Senators Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris have both said they would abandon the campaign trail to attend the Senate impeachment trial. However, it would be disastrous to abruptly stop campaigning right before the Democratic Iowa caucuses.

Mitch McConnell said if the impeachment trial were held this week, there’s no question the Senate would not convict.

“I’m pretty sure how it’s likely to end,” McConnell told reporters on Nov. 5. “If it were today, I don’t think there’s any question — it would not lead to a removal.”

He added: “So the question is, how long does the Senate want to take? How long do the [Democratic] presidential candidates want to be here on the floor of the Senate instead of [campaigning] in Iowa and New Hampshire?”

Fox News political analyst Brit Hume — who has covered Washington for 46 years — said the Democrats are like a dog chasing their own tail. He said impeachment will fail because there aren’t enough Republicans in the Senate who would vote to impeach Trump.

Even if Never-Trumpers like Mitt Romney vote against Trump, the impeachment is dead on arrival in the Senate because Democrats don’t have the votes.

“I think it’s pretty evident that the Democrats are going to go through and impeach this president. And the question then becomes, what happens in the Senate?” Hume told Fox News.

Hume explained: “The president can afford to lose 19 Republican senators and still survive. I don’t think there are anywhere near 19 Republican senators who are prepared to vote against him so far.”
