Heated Brazilian interview with Glenn Greenwald escalates to point of literal jabs

Journalist Glenn Greenwald was assaulted by another journalist while in the middle of a live radio show in Brazil.

The veteran journalist and one of the co-founding editors of The Intercept was attacked by Augusto Nunes during the live radio show Pânico on Thursday, The Hill reported.

The heated exchange occurred as the two engaged in a contentious debate with things escalating as Greenwald confronted the right-leaning columnist over remarks he made about his family.

They had been battling on social media previously as Nunes had apparently suggested the government investigate Greenwald because he and his husband, Brazilian politician David Miranda, were not spending time caring for their two children, criticizing Greenwald for spending time on Twitter receiving “stolen messages” from hackers.

“We have a lot of political differences, I have no problem being criticized for my work. I criticize him too, but what he did was the ugliest and dirtiest thing I’ve ever seen in my career as a journalist,” Greenwald said during the show, adding that the accusation was the “most disgusting thing I’ve seen in my life.”

He then confronted Nunes directly.

“I want to know if you still believe that a judge should investigate our family, with the possibility of taking our children away from home and returning … them to the shelter, without a mother, without a father, without a family…” he said.

Nunes argued back but Greenwald was not buying his answer.

“You are a coward! You are a coward,” shouted the award-winning writer, who reported in 2013 on U.S. and British global surveillance programs from documents disclosed by Edward Snowden.

“I’ll show you who has courage,” Nunes shot back, striking out at Greenwald.

The exchange escalated with staff at the studio intervening to separate them.

Greenwald posted a video on Twitter Thursday apparently calling out Nunes for targeting his family.

“Violence in a political debate is part of a fascist mindset and very dangerous for democracy,” he wrote.
