A CNN political director threw some cold water on Democrats celebrating Thursday’s impeachment vote.
David Chalian warned that the decision by House Democrats to side with Speaker Nancy Pelosi and not the American people will backfire on them in a big way going into the 2020 election.

Chalian spoke with CNN’s Brook Baldwin on “CNN Newsroom” Thursday, reacting to the divided House vote to formalize procedures for the impeachment inquiry which was sparked by a whistleblower complaint filed about Trump’s July phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“While the House was formalizing its resolution on the Trump impeachment investigation today, Democratic candidates have been swarming in other swing states,” Baldwin said, introducing the CNN political director who was in Iowa.
“I’m curious where you are, outside big cities, outside the polls, what are you hearing from voters in places like Iowa when it comes to Trump and impeachment?” she asked.
Chalian responded by recounting attending a “house party” in Newton with 2020 Democratic hopeful Sen Kamala Harris.
“By far, her biggest applause lines in the living room in this house, the stuff that excited these Democrats the most is when she said the lines about getting rid of Donald Trump. Saying thank you and good-bye to him. That gets the biggest applause,” Chalian said.
“That’s the Democratic faithful,” he said, before adding a cautionary word.
“What I think is important to remember as we’re looking into sort of the politics of impeachment, is when you look at those national polls, Brooke, that show you a majority may want to impeach and remove Donald Trump from office,” he said.
“When you look across some of the critical battleground states, those numbers are reversed. The majority do not want to impeach and remove Donald Trump from office,” he noted.
“This plays out district by district, which is why some of those Democratic members of the House, the majority makers, who come from districts Donald Trump won in 2019, they voted with Nancy Pelosi on this today for the most part,” he explained.
“And Republicans are pouncing to hang that vote around their neck because, in their districts back home where Donald Trump won, this idea of impeaching or removing him is not a popular one,” Chalian argued.
Republicans are taking advantage of the voting lineup from Thursday, targeting each of the Democrats who went along with the call to continue the sham impeachment proceedings against Trump.

The Congressional Leadership Fund, a GOP political action committee, launched a scathing new ad following the vote, highlighting the 29 Democrats in red districts won by Trump in 2016.
Trump’s 2020 campaign manager, Brad Parscale, noted that the impeachment vote was already proving to be a financial boon to the president’s reelection campaign.

“It’s been crystal clear since Election Day 2016 that Democrats were hell-bent on overturning the legitimate results of the election,” the Trump campaign’s deputy director of communications, Erin Perrine, told ABC News.
Pelosi “took a ‘Thelma and Louise’ approach and drove herself right off the impeachment cliff,” Perrine added. “You better believe the Trump team was ready to call Democrats out on their ridiculousness.”
