The White House slammed the “illegitimate impeachment” inquiry and the vote taken in the U.S. House of Representatives to formalize the process, which even prompted a rare and poignant remark from Ivanka Trump in defense of her dad.

The administration doubled down on the assertion that President Trump has done nothing wrong following the vote which came after heated debate on the House floor. The resolution was passed along party lines with a vote of 232-196, with Reps. Collin Peterson from Minnesota and Jeff Van Drew of New Jersey reportedly voting against their Democratic colleagues.

“The president has done nothing wrong, and the Democrats know it,” White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham said in a statement.

“Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats’ unhinged obsession with this illegitimate impeachment proceeding does not hurt President Trump; it hurts the American people,” Grisham added. “Instead of focusing on pressing issues that impact real families, like reducing gun violence, passing the USMCA, improving healthcare, lowering prescription drug costs, securing our southern border, and modernizing our aging infrastructure, the Democrats are choosing every day to waste time on a sham impeachment — a blatantly partisan attempt to destroy the president.”

“With today’s vote, Speaker Pelosi and the Democrats have done nothing more than enshrine unacceptable violations of due process into House rules,” Grisham continued. “The Democrats want to render a verdict without giving the administration a chance to mount a defense. That is unfair, unconstitutional, and fundamentally un-American.”

Trump fired off his instant reaction to the vote on Thursday.

In a surprise tweet, the president’s daughter, Ivanka, spoke up on Twitter where she quoted “Thomas Jefferson’s reflections on Washington, D.C. in a letter to his daughter Martha.”

“Some things never change, dad!” the first daughter reflected.

Not surprisingly, the rare commentary from the president’s eldest daughter sparked vicious reactions as anti-Trump critics pummeled her for tweeting.

The Trump 2020 campaign also slammed the attempt to remove the president from office for “strictly political reasons by a strictly partisan, illegitimate process.”

“Voters will punish Democrats who support this farce and President Trump will e easily re-elected,” Trump’s 2020 campaign manager Brad Parscale said in a statement.

Thursday’s vote does not officially start impeachment proceedings but only formalized the procedures of the impeachment inquiry. The resolution was introduced by Rep. Jim McGovern.

“I do not take any pleasure in the need for this resolution,” the Massachusetts Democrat said. “We are here because the facts compel us to be here.”

Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz condemned the vote as “another attempt to legitimize a sham process.”

“The American people see this for what it is,” he tweeted.
