An “anti-fascist” protester who violently assaulted a supporter of President Trump last year was sentenced to 18 months in prison.

Two weeks after pleading guilty in the attack, 32-year-old David Campbell was sentenced during a hearing at Manhattan Criminal Court on Wednesday for the 2018 incident outside of the Night for Freedom party in New York City.

The Antifa protester was led away in handcuffs after the sentence was delivered, according to Daily Mail, which reported that he “appeared shocked when the judge read out the sentence.”

Campbell was one of about 80 protesters at the event last January and admitted that he followed a 56-year-old Trump supporter out of the Manhattan venue that night, then brutally punched and choked him. The man, whose name was not released, was taken to the hospital and witnesses said they thought he had hit his head on the curb in the fall.

Campbell, who was arrested at the scene, was charged with assault for strangulation, possession of a weapon, assault of a police officer, resisting arrest and loitering.

The party had been organized by political activist and commentator Mike Cernovich, who spoke about what he saw as a double standard in the punishment for right-wing versus left-wing protesters.

“When the Proud Boys [a far-right fraternal organization] got into a street fight with Antifa members, it was a nationwide story. The Mayor and AG tweeted about the street fight. When Antifa attacked a 56-year-old man, silence from the press,” Cernovich told the New York Post earlier this month when Campbell pleaded guilty to two counts of felony assault.

“Now that the criminal case is closed, I will also be taking legal action against Mr. Campbell and his confederates. It is time to find out who is funding Antifa,” he added.

Cernovich was referring to the recent case in which two members of the Proud Boys who each received four-year sentences for a brawl in New York last year with members of Antifa, the radical left-wing group that has been likened to domestic terrorists.

Maxwell Hare, 27, and John Kinsman, 40, were sentenced to four years each for the incident, terms that were six months above the minimum, sparking complaints about the double standard.

Many others on Twitter echoed the remarks by Cernovich.
