Nephew, 8, reveals Texas woman shot by cop in her home was pointing gun out the window

The Texas woman shot and killed in her own home by a Fort Worth police officer had reportedly picked up her own gun moments before her death.

Atatiana Jefferson’s 8-year-old nephew, who was in the room with her when she was shot, told authorities that the 28-year-old victim took her handgun from her purse and pointed it “toward the window” just before she was struck by a bullet fired by Aaron Dean, now a former Fort Worth police officer, according to The Dallas Morning News.

According to the arrest warrant affidavit, the young boy told a forensic interviewer that he saw his aunt fall to the ground after being shot. The two had been playing video games about 2:30 a.m. Saturday when she heard noises outside of the home and reached for the gun she was legally licensed to carry.

According to CNN:

The 28-year-old woman was playing video games with her nephew in the back bedroom of the home when they heard noises coming from outside, the document says.

She then pulled her handgun from her purse, her nephew told police, and raised it. She was pointing it toward the window when she was shot and fell to the ground.

It’s unclear how much time passed before Jefferson was shot or whether the nephew heard the officer’s voice.

It “makes sense that she would have a gun if she felt that she was being threatened or there was someone in the backyard,” Interim Police Chief Ed Kraus said at a news conference Tuesday.

“It’s only appropriate that Ms. Jefferson would have a gun,” Lee Merritt, an attorney for Jefferson’s family, said of the legally owned firearm.”When you think there’s someone prowling around in the back at 2 in the morning, you may need to arm yourself. That person could have a gun.”

According to the Dallas Morning News:

The arrest-warrant affidavit for Dean released by police Tuesday said the glass storm doors to the house were closed, but the front and side interior doors were open. Officers peered into the residence through the storm doors but did not see anyone, and they did not announce their presence, according to the affidavit.

In body-camera footage of the shooting, Dean walks around in the backyard of the home. About a minute and a half into the recording released by Fort Worth police, Dean swivels toward a window, shouts at Jefferson to put up her hands and shoots her, all in a matter of seconds.

Dean, who resigned from the Fort Worth Police Department, was arrested and charged with murder on Monday.

According to the warrant, Dean has declined to speak with investigators since the incident, refusing to be interviewed immediately after and has not issued any kind of statement.

“I cannot tell you what he felt. He did not give a statement,” Kraus said Tuesday.
