Cory Booker takes on Trump-Ukraine: ‘I don’t think Watergate even compares’

Sen. Cory Booker continued the Democrats’ narrative of ignoring the actions of former Vice President Joe Biden in the Ukraine controversy while slamming President Trump over alleged corruption.

The New Jersey Democrat and 2020 presidential hopeful accused Trump of betraying the office of president while comparing it to Watergate in proportion during an interview on SiriusXM’s “The Joe Madison Show.”

“It is a betrayal of the office at the scale of which I haven’t seen in my lifetime. I’d have to go back to, God, I don’t think Watergate even compares to what this is,” Booker told SiriusXM host Joe Madison on Monday.

The former Newark mayor echoed Democrats’ pearl-clutching outrage over Trump’s phone call with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky in July, set off by a whistleblower complaint filed against the president which claimed Trump made a “promise” to Zelensky as he urged him to investigate Biden’s son Hunter.

“This is such a betrayal of our ideals. It is such a betrayal of Congressional intent,” Booker continued. “And he needs to answer for this should the facts bear out. So I hope that this is not people saying, ‘Oh, it’s just Trump being Trump.’ No, this is a deep potential violation of our Constitution, of our values. And it is an impeachable offense.”

“By the way, the fact that we don’t even have the whistleblower’s report in Congress is a violation of Congressional rules. It says in the whistleblower rule that the Inspector General shall give this information to the Intelligence Committee. Shall do it,” Booker insisted. “And then not giving it to Congress alone to me is a violation of our law.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi warned that a “whole new stage of investigation” could be coming as she called on lawmakers on both sides of the aisle to act in the wake of the administration blocking Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire from releasing the whistleblower document.

Booker’s criticisms echoed that of other Democrats who have worked relentlessly to shift the focus of the Ukraine controversy on Trump while conveniently ignoring the questionable conduct of the former vice president and his son.

“If he leveraged American foreign policy and foreign aid to get a president of another country to be the opposition research arm of his campaign, that is a fundamental, profound, and deeply disturbing abuse of power,” former Secretary of State John Kerry said in an appearance on CBS News’ “Face the Nation” Sunday, accusing Republicans of “supporting a cover-up” and Trump of potentially “extorting” a foreign leader.

“So I think this is a moral moment,” a grandstanding Booker said Monday in the radio interview. “I think this is a moment of patriotism, Republican or Democrat, to be demanding the truth come out, and hold this president accountable for his actions.”

But no one, it seems, is looking to hold Biden or his son “accountable” for their actions.

Trump defended himself again on Monday, speaking to reporters and reiterating that he did not do what the media and critics are accusing him of.

In an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Vice President Mike Pence also defended the president while slamming the media and Democrats for attacking Trump for actions that Biden “bragged” about.

“The ‘assume the worst media’ takes one report, runs with it. Democrats on Capitol Hill immediately start to denounce the president before anybody has the facts,” Pence said.

“The ironic thing is,” the vice president continued, “is that everything that our critics in the media are leveling at the president from this phone call, and leveling at our administration, everything that Democrats on Capitol Hill are running off and describing — Vice President Joe Biden bragged about — which was a quid-pro-quo — withholding American aid in exchange for a specific action.”
