President Trump’s attendance at a Southern California fundraising event sparked a clash between his supporters and protesters who tried to set a U.S. flag on fire.
Several fights reportedly broke out Tuesday outside of the Beverly Hills Hotel near the location where Trump was attending one of a series of California fundraisers, KABC-TV reported.

The clashes appeared to be triggered when the anti-Trump protesters attempted to set the American flag on fire. A violent struggle broke out as two men set upon each other in a brawl that quickly involved the Beverly Hills police who jumped in to separate them.
Police reportedly detained the men but did not arrest them, though the clashing groups were eventually separated physically to prevent more skirmishes. But other people in the crowd told KABC-TV that they did see more confrontations and one man told the station he was attacked by a protester.

“I didn’t know what was going on,” Harim Uzziel said.
“I saw a scuffle in between,” the Trump supporter who was wearing a red “Keep America Great” hat, recounted. “One of them came to the sidewalk and he started punching me and attacking me. I had a camera in each hand so I wasn’t able to defend myself.”
CBSLA’s Chris Holmstrom reported from the scene with video of the groups clashing.

Nearby, the president was attending a fundraiser hosted by real estate developer Geoffrey Palmer, who supported Trump in 2016. Tickets to the event reportedly sold from $1,000 to a $100,000 option which included an exclusive photo opportunity with the president.
Gregg Donovan bought one of the $1,000 tickets but said he would be getting a refund as the event was overbooked. The Trump supporter still showed up so he could show his support for the president.
“What he’s done for this country,” Donovan told KABC. “The respect we’re getting from around the world. I know because I’m a tour guide in Hollywood now. I see all the people from around the world. When I say welcome to the United States of America they look happy.”
Donovan was disappointed with the violence that erupted between protesters and Trump supporters, however.

“All my years, I’ve never seen that,” he told KCAL-TV. “I was very disappointed in both sides. I took a neutral stance. I just stood there with my sign the whole time, but the burning of the flag really hurt.”
Trump’s Beverly Hills stop was one of four fundraising events in the state, including stops in Los Angeles, San Diego and the Bay Area. More than $15 million is expected to be raised by the events according to the GOP, CBSLA reported.
