Baltimore restaurant at war with PC cops over dress code

A restaurant in Baltimore is finding out even something as innocuous as a dress code can get you in trouble with the politically correct crowd.

In a city riddled with violent crime, business owners decided to try and get in front of any potential shenanigans by posting a strict dress code for patrons. The establishment hadn’t yet opened before it received widespread backlash and accusations of racism when the rules were spread on social media.

The Choptank strives to become an upscale restaurant in a struggling city. To maintain the desired atmosphere, the owners posted the rules for attire: Excessively baggy clothing, vulgar and athletic attire, bandanas, and construction boots all made the list of “don’t wear” list among other items.

The Choptank’s website states it’s “opening soon” in the swankier Fells Point part of town. It boasts fish and crab, a wide array of cocktails and beer, a patio and live music 7 days a week.

But Baltimore might be missing out if critics of the sign that was reportedly spotted outside the establishment have their way.

The Choptank owners, Atlas Restaurant Group, provided Fox News with the following statement:

“Our policy is no different than countless other bars in Fells Point, Federal Hill and many other bar/restaurants around Maryland including Seacrets and Tiki Lee’s both posted on their websites. There are also national properties such as Wynn Las Vegas (XS) that have similar dress codes in their entertainment venus. The most prominent African-American nightclub in Baltimore, Select Lounge has a stricter dress code as well. Baltimore City Public Schools has a similar dress code and language for their students.”

The group also responded to the tweet above with a similar statement:

Being new to the Fells Point neighborhood, we simply implemented the dress code standard that is used by several other properties in the area including Barcocina, Bond Street Social Moby’s and The Horse You Came In On. Have a great day.

Needless to say, the explanation isn’t doing much to quell the backlash.

“Everyone else’s dress code is extremely racist so ours is as well” is not a great answer.

They are the owners of the establishment, they can set the rules and use their “discretion” as they see fit when it comes to attire.

Despite the testy backlash and racist allegations, The Choptank has found a lot of support since it defended itself.

The problem is, outrage mobs work. And despite a huge amount of support for the restaurant’s dress code, it looks as though the establishment may have walked it back a bit.

Atlas provided Fox News with a new list of official rules, omitting “baggy clothes, sideways hats, and sunglasses.”
