Matt Gaetz unloads at Lewandowski hearing

During an “impeachment investigation hearing” held Tuesday by the Democrat-led House Judiciary Committee, Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz used his position on the committee to rebuke Democrats for yet again wasting the American people’s time chasing after veritable ghosts (or witches).

Moreover, he blasted them for questioning the wrong people — namely President Donald Trump’s former 2016 campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, who’d been subpoenaed by chair Rep. Jerry Nadler to appear at Tuesday’s hearing so he could be interrogated like a criminal.

According to Gaetz, the man who truly deserved to be subpoenaed and interrogated like a criminal was disgraced former FBI Director James Comey. More on this later.

Listen to the first half of the congressman’s rebuke below:

“Well, the Mueller Report was supposed to be the end all, be all, the great groundswell of support for impeachment, ensuring the public would want to tar and feather the president, run him out of rail. Deprive the American people of the President they duly elected,” his rebuke began.

After the Mueller report turned out to be a dud, Democrats then turned their attention to Attorney Bill Barr, whom they began accusing of perpetrating a cover-up. Like the Mueller report, that line of attack ultimately failed, leaving the Democrats empty-handed yet again.

So what did the Democrats do next? They initiated so-called “impeachment investigation hearings” for the ostensible purpose of rooting out President Donald Trump’s alleged crimes (wasn’t the Mueller report supposed to do that?) and holding him accountable.

And all this despite polls showing that a majority of the American people oppose such a move.

After explaining the happenings of the last six or so months — and also detailing the Democrats’ inability to decide whether or not to impeach — Gaetz then turned his attention to Lewandowski.

“So, Mr. Lewandowski, do you have a thought as to why we continue to engage in a charade that is overwhelmingly opposed by the American people and fundamentally misunderstood by my democrat colleagues?” Gaetz asked the 46-year-old political operative.

“You know, congressman, I think they hate this president more than they love their country,” Lewandowski replied.

“Mr. Lewandowski, you were the campaign manager for the president’s campaign when the Obama-Biden administration was notified that there might be efforts by the Russians to interfere with our election. Isn’t that right?” Gaetz continued.

“Yes,” Lewandowski replied.

“And can you describe to us the briefing you got as the campaign manager to ensure that our system was resilient and American democracy was protected?” the congressman continued.

“There was no briefing provided by anybody from the Obama-Biden administration, members of the Intelligence Committee, or the FBI to our campaign when I was present or during my tenure as a campaign manager,” Lewandowski responded.

Fact-check: TRUE.

Instead of warning the Trump campaign, the Obama FBI — led by Comey — began investing the then-GOP nominee’s campaign for possible collusion with these same Russian operatives.

“That’s just baffling to me,” Gaetz said in exasperation. “I mean, our democracy is so precious. We have to cherish and protect it. And yet, when the Obama-Biden administration knew that there might be nefarious efforts to interfere or cooperate or any way disturb our democracy, they didn’t say anything to you.”

“Now, as you sit here today watching the facts unfold, do you have any rationale as to why maybe the Clapper, Brennan, Comey, Obama-Biden team didn’t want to give the Trump campaign a fair defensive briefing about the threats we were facing?”

“It’s actually unfathomable to me that they didn’t contact the major political nominee for president of the United States and inform them of potential threats against the election process in 2016,” Lewandowski replied.

“And we could be finding that out now,” Gaetz noted. “I mean, we could have those people before our committee to figure out what in the world happened that didn’t allow us to get those answers. One final question for you Mr. Lewandowski, has an inspector general employed by the United States government ever accused you of breaking the law?”

“No,” Lewandowski replied.

“No, but they have done that with James Comey,” Gaetz said.

Fact-check: TRUE.

A report released last month by Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz made it clear in explicit terms that Comey had repeatedly “violated Department or FBI policy, or the terms of Comey’s FBI Employment Agreement.”

“Yet the leadership of this committee will not bring James Comey before it even though the inspector general said that his work impaired the credibility and efforts of over 35,000 FBI agents and the brave people fighting for our country,” Gaetz continued.

It’s a shame that you’re here Mr. Lewandowski. Jim Comey should be sitting in that chair, he should be answering questions about why he did so much damage to the FBI and our country, including not giving you the briefing that you were entitled to.”
