Sen. Ben Sasse: Cyberwar with China would cripple military’s GPS

Sen. Ben Sasse is sounding the alarm on a potentially “disastrous” cyber war in which China could be “blowing up everything” in space.

The Nebraska Republican shared his doomsday warning while speaking with John Catsimatidis on his radio show, “The Cats Roundtable,” on Sunday .

“America is decades behind where we need to be in the cyber fight,” Sasse, who is a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee and the new Cyber Commission, said, explaining how “we are well into the age of cyber war” and that the cyber domain is the “final frontier of warfare.”

“We’re not doing nearly enough to protect America’s people against emerging cyber threats Russia, from North Korea, from Iran, but especially from China.,” he said, noting the “constant and ever growing threat” to the U.S.

Sasse explained that China has tried to “weaponize” the area known as “near space” which encompasses the “satellite architecture” that orbits earth.

“U.S. weapons systems are dependent on GPS, obviously, and most of our infrastructure that we use for the U.S. military is actually rented from the private sector,” he continued. “China has envisioned a lot of game theory that has them sort of blowing up everything in the near-space early in a conflict, which would take away lots of things like GPS.”

“It would be absolutely disastrous for us,” the lawmaker and 2016 “Never Trump” Republican said.

”I’ve been pushing Washington to get serious about these threats and to draft a badly needed cyber playbook. Because we don’t have either offensive or defensive doctrine,” he added,

Sasse, who is currently seeking a second term in Congress, also noted that China and Russia have been thinking about “asymmetric warfare” in new ways and warned that the U.S. hasn’t done “nearly enough” in preparing for this form of high-tech conflict.

“We haven’t done nearly enough planning for the asymmetric phases of war and while we still lead China and Russia, our qualitative military edge is shrinking. And the amount of money China is investing in particular should keep all American policymakers up at night,” he said.

President Trump, who endorsed Sasse in his reelection bid last week, announced the establishment of the U.S. Space Command last month.

“It will ensure that America’s dominance in space is never questioned and never threatened because we know the best way to prevent conflict is to prepare for victory,” Trump said. adding that the move “will soon be followed very importantly by the establishment of the United States Space Force as the sixth branch of the United States armed forces. That’s really something, when you think about it.”
