Patriots woes: After signing, Antonio Brown accused of rape

Less than 24 hours after the New England Patriots formally signed team-hopping NFL star Antonio Brown, a report emerged that Brown may just be a two-time sexual assaulter and one-time rapist.

“Antonio Brown of the New England Patriots, the most prominent wide receiver in the N.F.L., has been accused of raping a woman who worked as his trainer,” The New York Times confirmed Tuesday, citing a federal lawsuit filed earlier that day in Florida.

“The lawsuit says that Brown — in three separate incidents, two in June 2017 and another in May 2018 — sexually assaulted a woman named Britney Taylor, a gymnast whom he met while they were attending Central Michigan together and whom he later hired as a trainer.”

During the first June 2017 incident, Brown allegedly exposed himself to Taylor and kissed her without permission. During the second incident later that month, the two were reportedly watching religious programming on a tablet at his home when he began masturbating behind her and ejaculated on her back. It’s unclear how he managed to do that without her apparently being aware of what was happening. It’s also unclear why she never spoke up about it before.

Included in the suit are screenshots of some of the text messages that Brown sent Taylor following the incident. One of them mentions the masturbation incident.

“Taylor ended her working relationship with Brown” because of the incident, the Times’ report continues, “but several months later, when he contacted her to apologize, she relented. She was, according to the lawsuit, ‘swayed by his assurance that he would cease any sexual advances.'”

But when the two met up on May 20, 2018 in what was apparently a private home, Brown allegedly forced Taylor onto a bed and “forcibly” raped her.

“She tried to resist him, screaming and repeatedly shouting ‘no’ and ‘stop,’ the lawsuit says, but Brown refused and penetrated her,” the Times notes.

The filing of this suit occurred only days after the Oakland Raiders released Brown in part because of all the controversy he’d brought to he team.

“Just in the past two months, one of the most talented wide receivers in the league posted pictures online of his blistered feet, refused to switch to a new football helmet, used an Instagram post to ask to be released from his team and, for good measure, posted a YouTube video with a cryptic telephone call with, it seems, his now-former coach,” the Times reported last Saturday.

“Even for the Raiders, a team known for courting controversy, the seven-time Pro Bowl receiver was too much. The Raiders granted Brown his wish and released him.”

Two days later, the Patriots signed him.

In a statement posted after the suit was filed Tuesday, Brown’s attorney disputed the allegations, accused Taylor of trying to swindle his client and claimed the two had engaged in consensual activity.

“Mr. Brown denies each and every allegation in the lawsuit. He will pursue all legal remedies to not only clear his name, but to also protect other professional athletes against false accusations,” the statement by attorney Darren Heitner reads.

“Mr. Brown was approached by his accuser in 2017, shortly after Mr. Brown signed a contract making him the highest paid wide receiver in the NFL. At that time, Mr. Brown was asked to invest $1.6 million dollars in the accuser’s business project.”

But according to Heitner, it was pretty much a scam.

“Mr. Brown was not informed by his accuser that she had just been levied with a $30,000 IRS tax lien or that $300,000 of the $1.6 million so called ‘investment’ was to be used to purchase property already owned by the accuser and her mother,” his statement continues.

“When Mr. Brown refused to make the $1.6 million ‘investment,’ the accuser supposedly cut off communications with Mr. Brown. However, in 2018, the accuser resurfaced and offered to travel to Pennsylvania and South Florida to train Mr. Brown for the upcoming season. Thereafter, the accuser engaged Mr. Brown in a consensual personal relationship. Any sexual interaction with Mr. Brown was entirely consensual.”

The Patriots has, for its part, vowed to conduct its own investigation.

“We are aware of the civil lawsuit that was filed earlier today against Antonio Brown, as well as the response by Antonio’s representatives,” the team said in a statement.

“We take these allegations very seriously. Under no circumstance does this organization condone sexual violence or assault. The league has informed us that they will be investigating. We will have no further comment while that investigation takes place.”

As for Taylor, she released her own statement and vowed to assist the NFL with its investigation.

“As a rape victim of Antonio Brown, deciding to speak out has been an incredibly difficult decision,” she said. “I have found strength in my faith, my family, and from the accounts of other survivors of sexual assault.”

The reaction to these allegations have been surprisingly skeptical, with many seemingly suggesting that Taylor is the type of woman that comedian Roseanne Barr would call a “ho.”
