Biden says ‘Hell yes’ appointing Obama to SCOTUS should he get the chance

Former Vice President Joe Biden is already thinking about who he will appoint to the Supreme Court if he is elected president.

The 2020 Democratic hopeful was more than enthusiastic on Thursday’s “Late Night with Stephen Colbert” with the idea of a “fully qualified” former President Barack Obama donning the robes of the higher court.

The late-night show host asked Biden a series of questions in a “lightning round” during his appearance, at one point asking if he had called Obama for any advice on the presidential campaign. The Democrat referred to the former president by first name, again, and said he had spoken to him “about three, four weeks ago.”

“Would you appoint him to the Supreme Court?” Colbert asked next.

“Hell,” Biden replied, as the audience broke into laughter and applause.

“Yes,” he added, grinning.

“I don’t think he’d do it,” he noted, admitting that “he’s fully qualified” as Colbert interjected that Obama taught Constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School.

“Have you asked Michelle Obama for advice?” Colbert asked in a follow-up.

“Only to be my vice president,” he said to a roar of the audience. “I’m only joking! Michelle, I’m joking! That was a joke.”

Biden touted his own record during the discussion, frequently citing accomplishments he took credit for during the Obama administration. He also praised the former president as a “nice guy.”

“You said your campaign is not a continuation of Barack Obama’s administration. What would you differ with him on?” Colbert asked. “What should you have done differently?”

Biden responded by painting a picture of his former boss as everything short of the Messiah.

“Look, he pulled us out of a God-awful recession, prevented a depression, everything landed on his desk but locusts and he got an awful lot done,” he retorted. “And the biggest thing was not one single solitary piece of illegitimate action took place in the United States presidency. Not one.”

The late-night host also grilled Biden about what to expect in next week’s Democratic debate, while reminding him of his radical 2020 rivals like Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders.

“What do you say to Democratic voters [who say] that you’re not progressive enough? That you’re – that incremental change is not what we need right now, and that Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren, who are calling for broader systemic change, are what we need right now?” he asked.

“You’re going to be on stage with Elizabeth Warren for the first time….Is it going to be rough and tumble? Because it’s gonna be broad systematic change and what people say is incrementalism. They’re looking for a fight, sir,” Colbert said.

“There is no incrementalism in what I’m proposing,” Biden replied, noting that the “boldest thing I would change is the way we deal with climate change.”

And appointing his former boss to the Supreme Court, even if he was joking.

Biden’s hankering to return to the Obama glory years may not be a dream shared by many Americans, even if he does insist it was a scandal free presidency.

Former Secretary of Defense James Mattis did not have a glowing assessment of the same administration, calling out Obama and his administration’s foreign policy for the way it mishandled the Iraq War.

In his new book, “Call Sign Chaos: Learning to Lead,” Mattis also revealed the former president’s dealings with Iran.

“The administration was secretly negotiating with Iran, although I was not privy to the details at the time,” Mattis wrote.

And while Biden shared his dreams of reliving his Obama years with Colbert, Twitter users saw this as a mark against the Democratic hopeful.
