Political commentator Charlie Hurt believes that far-left Democrats are “destroying” their own party and may be handing President Donald Trump some of their own moderate voters on Election Day.
The Washington Times opinion editor sees the extreme faction of the Democrat Party inflicting potentially irreparable “damage” to their 2020 aspirations as moderate voters continue to be ignored.

“It’s obvious that Democrats like AOC are doing a lot to damage the party in the eyes of sort of a general election electorate,” Hurt said during a panel discussion on Fox News’ “Hannity” Friday, referring to New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other far-left members of Congress such as the freshman Democrats known as “the Squad.”
Progressive policies like Medicare-for-all are also touted by 2020 hopefuls such as Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.
“I think they’re destroying their own Democratic base because there are a lot of rank-and-file, regular Democrat voters out there,” Hurt said.
“And these are the people you see registered in the polls favoring Joe Biden, who don’t support – these are Democrats now – they’re people who don’t like Donald Trump and they can give you legitimate reasons for not liking him … they have nothing to do with Russia or racism,” he explained.
“They’re completely not represented by any of these loons in the Democratic Party who are racing to the left to give free health care to illegal aliens,” Hurt said, adding that these Democrats may be picked up by Trump if the party were to choose a nominee who is more left-leaning.
“I think Donald Trump picks up a lot of those people, come the general election, but before that in the Democratic primary I think it hurts the party,” he told guest host Dan Bongino.
Hurt also addressed Ocasio-Cortez’s recent social media video stunt as she criticized the Electoral College during a drive on some deserted roadways in rural America.

Hurt called out the New York congresswoman’s wish to abolish the voting system established by the Founders.
“The reason that’s such a problem for us is the fact that the House of Representatives is, of course, the closest representation to the people. For her to be ignorant on this is pretty disturbing,” he said.
Ocasio-Cortez slammed the voting system as a “scam” in an Instagram story she shared Monday, scoffing as she drove along a deserted stretch of road, “many votes here, as you can see.”
“Very efficient way to choose leadership of the country. I mean I can’t think of any other way, can you?” the freshman congresswoman said, claiming the system has a “racial injustice breakdown” which undermines minorities.
“Due to severe racial disparities in certain states, the Electoral College effectively weighs white voters over voters of color, as opposed to a ‘one person, one vote’ system where all our votes are counted equally,” she added, concluding that “Facts are facts America. The Electoral College has to go.”
Hurt suggested Ocasio-Cortez needed to go back to school.
“If she went back to a civics class in elementary school … she would learn the whole point of this debate and the wisdom of our founders was to create a system that gave states enough power to be a counterweight to the federal government,” he said.
