A town in Missouri is feeling uneasy in the wake of several unnerving finds recently.
Residents in Festus have been encountering a wave of child-like dolls being left in unusual places, but they are not sparking smiles in the Jefferson County town.

In fact, dolls without heads, some without faces and all in unlikely places are giving residents the creeps. They are also keeping local authorities on alert, according to KSDK-TV.
In the past week, dolls have been found hanging from a light pole, laying on the ground, leaning against a pole as if crying and other head-scratching positions, leaving the city baffled as to why and who is behind the pranks.
“As you can tell, it looks like a little girl. The hands are sown to the face, there’s no face on it. If you’re to see that from behind, that looks like a little girl,” Festus Chief of Police Tim Lewis said.

“If you’re out and about and you see that, it looks like a little girl crying against a pole, and someone is going to stop. In this town people are good-hearted,” he added, worried that people might get hurt. “People are gonna stop and check to make sure that’s not a child. And then they’re either gonna get hit, or there’s a chance they get out of the car and they get run over.” he said.
“Then you’re dealing with catastrophe,” Lewis added.
Neighboring Crystal City also reported a doll sighting, according to KSDK.

Festus residents aren’t sure if the dolls are part of a prank or if there is some other motive for leaving them in random places. They seemed to be in agreement that the whole thing is just creepy.
“Somebody just wants attention. Or they think it’s funny to put out and they’re giggling as they see people stopping,” Lewis said.
“Somebody thinks it’s funny, somebody thinks it’s cute, it’s all fun and games until somebody stops, thinking it’s a child in distress, and gets hit trying to help out,” Festus Captain Doug Wendel told MyMoInfo.com.
“So whoever’s doing it, we know you think it’s fun and games, but it could be a very dangerous situation,” he added.
Though the dolls disappear just as quickly as they are spotted, police don’t yet have any idea who may be behind the prank – if that’s what it is. In the meantime, they are warning residents to remain mindful of their surroundings.
