Wasserman Schultz calls AG Barr’s vow to investigate Epstein ‘obscenely inadequate’

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) has slammed the “obscenely inadequate” promise by Attorney General William Barr to investigate the death of Jeffrey Epstein.

The Florida Democrat called for accountability from the Department f Justice in a statement following Barr’s remarks on Saturday in which he said he was “appalled” to learn of the convicted sex offender’s death by suicide, according to Florida Politics.

Wasserman Schultz blasted the “irresponsible conspiracy theories” that she attributed to President Donald Trump in the wake of the billionaire financier’s death after reportedly hanging himself in his jail cell where he was being held without bond until a trial on sex trafficking charges.

Epstein’s Palm Beach mansion is not far from the Democrat’s congressional district, and she pointed out how last year she called for the DOJ’s Inspector General Michael Horowitz to “conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the non-prosecution agreement” that Epstein entered into with Alex Acosta, Trump’s former secretary of labor who resigned last month amid criticism of his 2008 plea deal with the sex offender.

“Attorney General William Barr’s call for an Inspector General investigation of Jeffrey Epstein’s death is obscenely inadequate,” Wasserman Schultz said in a statement.

“I led a call in Congress for an Inspector General probe of the entire Justice Department handling of Epstein’s lenient plea deal – last year. It was never done,” she said. “An IG probe of his apparent suicide may only quell the irresponsible conspiracy theories President [Donald] Trump peddles, but it will not provide true independent accountability to those who survived his horrific crimes. The IG must investigate this entire DOJ miscarriage of justice.”

Barr announced Monday that DOJ officials would investigate “serious irregularities” at the Metropolitan Correctional Center where Epstein was being held and they would “get to the bottom” of what happened.

“We are now learning of serious irregularities at this facility that are deeply concerning and demand a thorough investigation,” Barr said. “The FBI and the Office of Inspector General are doing just that.”

“Let me assure you this case will continue on against anyone who was complicit with Epstein,” he said. “Any co-conspirators should not rest easy. The victims deserve justice and they will get it.”

He added that, while the case was important to the prosecutors and the DOJ, it was most “important to the victims who had the courage to come forward and deserve the opportunity confront the accused in the courtroom.”

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) echoed Wasserman Schultz earlier this year and launched an investigation of the plea deal reached with Epstein which saw him register as a sex offender but only serve 13 months in Palm Beach County jail with work release.

On Saturday, the Nebraska Republican slammed the Justice Department, saying it “failed” and “heads must roll.”

“The Department of Justice failed, and today Jeffrey Epstein’s co-conspirators think they might have just gotten one last sweetheart deal. Every single person in the Justice Department — from your Main Justice headquarters staff all the way to the night-shift jailer — knew that this man was a suicide risk, and that his dark secrets couldn’t be allowed to die with him,” Sasse said. “Given Epstein’s previous attempted suicide, he should have been locked in a padded room under unbroken, 24/7, constant surveillance. Obviously, heads must roll.”
