Dr. Drew: Dem debates ignore LA homelessness because it’s an indictment of their failed policies

Dr. Drew Pinsky blamed the homelessness crisis in California directly on failed Democratic policies and said this was why the issue was avoided at this week’s debates.

Moderators at the Democratic primary debates failed to bring up the topic of homelessness that is escalating in California cities and other cities across the nation. President Trump lamented the effects of the crisis on the “beautiful” state of California during a rally speech in Ohio Thursday.

“It was not a topic of debate because unfortunately, the homeless situation in California is directly the result of failed policies here,” Pinsky told Fox News host Laura Ingraham on “The Ingraham Angle” Thursday.

“This is not a housing problem,” the celebrity doctor and addiction specialist noted. “This is a mental health crisis and the federal government does not have specific jurisdiction over mental health in the Constitution.”

“We have had total decay of our mental health provisions for the chronically mentally ill. They are all on the streets,” he added. “I spent the day there on Sunday and 100 percent, other than the criminals that I saw preying on the homeless, 100 percent of the people in the streets were either major mental illness or drug addiction, 100[percent. I talked to dozens of people and they all told me the same thing. Everybody’s is on drugs — no surprise there.”

He noted that the other problem is that about half of the people will “refuse care no matter what you offer them” or how good the services are because the problem is rooted in mental health.

“Part of having this condition much like if you had dementia, you lose insight into what is going on and you become attached to the circumstances you are in,” Pinsky, a Los Angeles resident, said, naming off the failed policies that have to be modified or revamped in order to make a difference.

“They are dying on the streets and my constant refrain to every one of them is how many bodies on the streets before they are willing to change the policy?” he asked.

Ingraham noted how the problem is not restricted to California but that right in Washington, D.C. there are people she has seen in the streets “shooting up” and defecating.

“And people just drive by,” she said, blaming local and state governments.

Pinsky has frequently spoken out about the California crisis, warning of a deadly epidemic that could strike Los Angeles this summer which he told Fox News Radio’s “The Brian Kilmeade Show,” airing on Fox Nation would be the fault of local politicians.

“We have tens and tens of thousands of people living in tents. Horrible conditions. Sanitation. Rats have taken over the city,” he told Kilmeade. “We’re the only city in the country, Los Angeles, without a rodent control program. We have multiple rodent-borne, flea-borne illnesses, plague, typhus. We’re gonna have louse-borne illness. If measles breaks into that population, we have tuberculosis exploding.”

The president, who was slammed by the left for calling out the “disgusting” conditions in the Maryland district of Rep. Elijah Cummings last week, spoke about the situation in California and the inner cities across the country on Thursday.

“What they are doing to our beautiful California is a disgrace to our country,” he said to the crowd. “It’s a shame. The world is looking at it. Look at Los Angeles with the tents and the horrible, horrible conditions. Look at San Francisco, look at some of your other cities.”

“No one has paid a higher price for the far-left destructive agenda than Americans living in our nation’s inner cities, he added. “We send billions and billions and billions for years and years and it’s stolen money, and it’s wasted money.”
