A CNN host almost broke into tears Saturday morning when reporting on and responding to President Donald Trump’s criticisms of Rep. Elijah Cummings.
Watch:
According to host Victor Blackwell, the president’s criticisms of Cummings — which were that a “brutal bully” like him should spend more time taking care of his decrepit Baltimore district and less time haranguing America’s U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents — were rooted in racism.
“You see a pattern here?” he asked as a graphic showing the latest targets of the president’s rage appeared on the screen.
Besides Cummings, the graphic also showed members of the so-called “squad” –Reps. Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ayanna Pressley — as well as Rep. John Lewis.
Because all six of the Democrats listed were minorities, that could only mean one thing, Blackwell theorized.
“Just two weeks ago President Trump attacked 4 minority congresswoman — why don’t they go back to the totally broken and prime infested places from which they came,” he said.
He then recalled the criticism the president had for Lewis way back in January of 2017:
Congressman John Lewis should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to……

mention crime infested) rather than falsely complaining about the election results. All talk, talk, talk – no action or results. Sad!

What bothered Blackwell the most was that both the president’s tweets about Lewis and his tweets about Cummings contained the word “infested.”
“[W]hen he tweets about infestation, it’s about black and brown people. September 2014, at the height of an urgent health emergency, [Trump tweeted] ‘why are we sending thousands of ill-trained soldiers into Ebola-infested areas of Africa. Bring the plague to the U.S. Obama is so stupid,'” the host lamented.
“Infested he says. [Then Trump tweeted] ‘there’s a revolution going on in California, so many sanctuary areas want out of this ridiculous crime-infested and breeding concept.’ Infested he says.”
It appears the president uses the word “infested” when referring to crime or disease. Macmillan Dictionary defines “infested as a term” “used with some nouns to make adjectives meaning ‘full of something harmful or unpleasant.” As an example, the dictionary cites the very term “crime-infested city.”
But much like AOC falsely believes the word “nasty” is rooted in sexism, so Blackwell falsely believes the word “infested” is rooted in racism.
“The president says about Congressman Cummings’ district … that no human would want to live there,” Blackwell continued as he began to choke up. “You know who did, Mr. President? I did. From the day I was brought home from the hospital to the day that I left for college. And a lot of people I care about still do. There are challenges, no doubt, but people are proud of their community.”
“I don’t want to sound self-righteous, but people get up and go to work there, they care for their families there, they love their children who pledge allegiance to the flag just like people who live in districts of congressmen who support you sir. They are Americans too. We’ll be right back.”
It’s unclear what this has to do with the president’s criticisms. Trump didn’t insult the people who live in Baltimore but rather those among the city’s leaders and representatives, including Cummings, who’ve done virtually nothing to address the city’s problems, of which there are many.
Here’s one example:
He claims to care about children & their future, however in West Baltimore you will find abandoned homes on every block. Many filled with trash, rodents & homeless looking for shelter. Children live on these streets seen here. This district belongs to @RepCummings. More to come.. pic.twitter.com/8z7tfIHU0q

And another:
Let’s walk through a typical abandoned row house in West Baltimore. You will find at least one of these on every street. According to residents, there is an uptick in homeless thanks to the increase in drug inventory post 2015 riots. This is @RepCummings district, more to come… pic.twitter.com/KOu87Mqlys

And yet another:
8 blocks of row houses in West Baltimore are currently using water through a system hooked to the fire hydrants. Please listen to Michelle, a life long resident, discuss the water & her message to city officials. This is @RepCummings district. More to come… pic.twitter.com/jBHBzYxtaA

Residents constantly call the city to remove trash, no one shows up for months. Rats & roaches are a problem in almost every home. Illegal immigrants at the border live in better conditions than Americans in West Baltimore. This is @RepCummings district.

Let’s continue to expose the truth. This is a neighborhood filled w/families that have small children. West Baltimore is filled with trash thanks to dumping. A problem city officials should have addressed years ago. This is @RepCummings district. @realDonaldTrump

Love it or hate it, this is the reality of life in Baltimore, and no amount of sugarcoating and racial grievance mongering by Blackwell will change that. Nor will his tears and false equivalences change the fact that in recent days Baltimore has been hit with “brazen attacks” involving civilians being brutally beaten had having their heads stomped in.
