A Florida Democrat who recently dropped out of the race for a seat in the state’s House of Representatives admits that she lied when she claimed that she was a medical doctor who had treated victims of the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando.
“I lied,” Elizabeth McCarthy told state investigators, according to Florida Politics. “It is a false statement.”
McCarthy, who ended her campaign last month, admits that “I just made it up.” She says her lies were motivated by a desire to be important.
“I wanted to be somebody in the community, and I’m sorry,” she said. “I’m sorry that I gave any impersonation. I knew it was wrong and I should have stopped.”
While running for the state congressional seat, McCarthy made headlines after bragging that she had treated 32 victims of the 2016 massacre when she was a doctor at the Orlando Regional Medical Center.
“I personally removed 77 bullets from 32 people,” McCarthy boasted earlier this year. “It was like an assembly line.”
After confessing that she made up the entire self-aggrandizing lie, Elizabeth McCarthy was fined $3,094 for misrepresenting herself as a medical professional. When the Florida media started investigating her false claims, McCarthy initially dismissed the evidence that she was not a doctor by calling the reports “campaign smearing.”
But after the Florida Department of Health told reporters that it had never issued a medical license to McCarthy, she ‘fessed up and dropped out of her race to win a seat in the Florida House of Representatives for District 28.

In a bizarre twist, Seddique Mateen — the father of the radicalized Muslim gunman — was an informant for the Obama FBI for 11 years.
In addition to his connection to the Obama FBI, Seddique Mateen was a vocal supporter of Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential race.
In fact, he was spotted sitting directly behind Hillary at a rally near the Pulse nightclub less than two months after his son murdered club goers there.
In May 2018, Noor Salman, the widow of Pulse nightclub killer Omar Mateen, was acquitted even though many of the jurors were convinced she knew about her ISIS-loyalist husband’s terrorist plot beforehand.
“A verdict of not guilty did NOT mean that we thought Noor Salman was unaware of what Omar Mateen was planning to do,” the jury foreman wrote in the Orlando Sentinel. “On the contrary, we were convinced she did know.”
However, the foreman said the jury had no choice but to return a not-guilty verdict because Salman was tried for “aiding and abetting and obstruction of justice,” and not for whether she knew about the Islamist terrorist plot before it happened.
“We were not tasked with deciding if she was aware of a potential attack,” he said. “The charges were aiding and abetting and obstruction of justice.”
