U.S. Women’s National Team co-captain Megan Rapinoe continued her national anthem protest at the start of the New York City victory parade for the team.
The controversial soccer star could be seen during a rendition of the national anthem Wednesday ahead of the ticker tape parade celebrating the team’s World Cup championship.

NYPD officer Lauren Leggio sang the anthem ahead of the ceremony set to honor the women’s team which just returned home after their victory against the Netherlands at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Speaking to a crowd gathered in front of New York’s City Hall on Wednesday, Rapinoe said she was at a “loss for words” as she praised her teammates.
“We have pink hair and purple hair. We have tattoos, dreadlocks. We’ve got white girls and black girls, and everything in between,” she said to cheers. “Straight girls and gay girls.”
“I couldn’t be more proud to be a co-captain” she added. “It’s my absolute honor to lead this team out on the field. There’s no other place that I would rather be — even in the presidential race.”
“This is my charge to everyone: We have to be better. We have to love more. Hate less. We got to listen more and talk less,” Megan Rapinoe says. “It’s our responsibility to make the world a better place.” https://t.co/7LJHPDVRm9 pic.twitter.com/5s5OuS4Gsx

Rapinoe has been at the center of a controversial clash with President Trump over her comment in an interview saying she was “not going to the f—— White House” if the team was invited following a win. The team’s star forward has sparked backlash by disrespecting the national anthem, and has focused attention on the alleged disparities in the treatment of male and female soccer teams as well as the inequality of pay.
While Rapinoe and her polarizing teammates have been busy bashing Trump and any potential visit to the White House, an invitation from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to tour the House was immediately accepted. And on Monday, she said the team would be “very happy to accept” an invitation from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to come to Capitol Hill.
She doubled down on her rhetoric in an interview with CNN host Anderson Cooper on Tuesday.

Rapinoe is apparently embracing the spotlight as was seen at Wednesday’s parade in New York City.

But while the mainstream media celebrated the liberal soccer star and her teammates, giving a platform to their “equal pay” chants, other parade-goers pointed out the presence of Trump supporters along the parade route.

Excellent! As much as I like USA to win championships, I will admit I was hoping they lost??♀️. And as soon as they won and the ?flying from their mouths happened I felt okay with my decision! They are not worthy to represent the USA! Stand for our flag!!????Respect our President!
