AG Barr jokes that his return to DOJ is like D-Day invasion

Attorney General William Barr joked about the reception he has received since returning to the Justice Department, comparing the experience to the D-Day invasion.

Remarking on coverage of the 75th anniversary of when Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy in World War II, Barr noted Friday how he almost felt like one of the soldiers landing in enemy territory.

“I’m a two-time offender. This is my second stint as attorney general,” he told agents graduating from the FBI Academy.

“As we’ve been watching the coverage of June 6, 1944 D-Day, I had the thought that my arrival this time felt a little bit, I think, like jumping into Sainte-Mère-Église on the morning of June 5, trying to figure out where you could land without getting shot,” Barr quipped, referring to the French town where paratroopers descended in the 1945 invasion.

Barr has drawn the ire of Democrats who have accused him of misrepresenting special counsel Robert Mueller’s report and of shielding President Trump. They have threatened to hold in contempt for reusing to comply with a request by House Democrats for more information on the investigation.

As BPR reported, Barr told “CBS This Morning” last week that he has “a lot of questions about what was going on” at the beginning stages of the Mueller investigation into alleged Russian election interference, and the answers he has gotten have not proved satisfactory.

Barr, who served as attorney general under former President George H.W. Bush, said that “some of the facts that I’ve learned don’t hang together with the official explanations of what happened,” adding that “things are just not jiving.”

The House Committee on Oversight and Reform is ready to vote on holding Barr in contempt for refusing to meet deadlines in subpoena requests on questions related to a citizenship question to the 2020 census.

The chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, Rep. Elijah Cummings, suggested the efforts are part of a “cover-up.”

Barr’s D-Day comment sparked the usual backlash by those who are selectively offended.

The left had no problem with liberal CNN host Chris Cuomo invoking D-Day, however, in his rant to Democrats on the subject of impeaching Trump.

“Do your duty. This is D-Day. We’re celebrating people making the ultimate sacrifice only out of a matter of duty,” Cuomo addressed Congressional Democrats during his monologue on “Cuomo Prime Time” Thursday. “Take a look at the Constitution. Your job is to check the executive, whether to do that or not or how, that’s up to you but you’ve got to make a decision.”
