Fed-up cops begin to revolt against disgusting conditions at LAPD station, at least 1 officer contracts typhus

Angry Los Angeles police officers are demanding action while threatening to seek transfers out of a downtown station infested with rats and other vermin.

Unsanitary conditions at the Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Division station have become a point of contention for officers who feel their health is at risk due to rodent infestations and other filthy conditions, the Los  Angeles Times reported.

The station that serves skid row and other parts of the downtown area was cited by state officials in November for the rat infestations among other issues. A Cal/OSHA report found “the presence of rats/rodents, fleas, roaches, flies, gnats, mosquitoes and grasshoppers was detected at the LAPD Central Community Police Station.”

The conditions have caused frustration and anger from police officers who are concerned for their safety as the spread of filth and disease appears to be getting worse in the downtown Los Angeles area. The LAPD Central Community has the largest number of sworn officers in the city, with 414 currently.

“Officers worry enough about being shot or injured policing the streets of Los Angeles, they shouldn’t also have to worry about being infected by diseases that they can take home to their families, simply by showing up to work,” the Los Angeles Police Protective League said in a statement. “Our demand is simple; clean it up and provide preventive measures before there is a massive outbreak.”

The reports on the LAPD conditions come amid other recent reports about health conditions being threatened amid the city’s problems with rat-infested garbage and a sprawling homeless community, problems that the California city claims to be addressing even while the state continues to champion itself as a sanctuary for illegal immigrants.

Celebrity doctor Drew Pinsky has been sounding the alarm on a deadly epidemic that could strike Los Angeles this summer, and says local politicians will have to bear the blame.

“We have tens and tens of thousands of people living in tents. Horrible conditions. Sanitation. Rats have taken over the city,” he said on Fox News Radio’s “The Brian Kilmeade Show” last week. “We’re the only city in the country, Los Angeles, without a rodent control program. We have multiple rodent-borne, flea-borne illnesses, plague, typhus. We’re gonna have louse-borne illness. If measles breaks into that population, we have tuberculosis exploding.”

A vermin infestation at City Hall last year and a sick LAPD employee last eek have added to the anger the officers are feeling.

According to the Los Angeles Times:

The LAPD announced late Wednesday that an employee who fell ill at the downtown LAPD station had contracted the strain of bacteria that causes typhoid fever and was being treated for the condition. The LAPD confirmed that a second employee had a lower intestinal infection, but a specific diagnosis has not been determined.

It’s unclear where the officers contracted typhoid, though officials said they were not patrol officers. The LAPD appeared to link the case to officers’ work conditions, saying in a statement that “our police officers often patrol in adverse environments and can be exposed to various dangerous elements.”

Attorney Jim Breslo argued that California’s politicians need to look to their own backyard in addressing the deteriorating health conditions.

“The governor appears more focused on global issues, preparing for a run against this president, instead of solving problems here in California,” the podcast host told “Fox & Friends” Monday, calling attention to the dire situation. “California is demonstrating, again and again, the failure to provide the most basic governmental needs for its people.”

Meanwhile, Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom took a shot at President Trump with a tweet touting his state’s progressive record.

He was quickly schooled by the Heritage Foundation’s Amy Swearer who delivered a sobering reality check.
