Letterman tired of ‘hand-wringing’ over Trump: ‘Just stop yacking about what a goon he is’

David Letterman wants America to “stop yacking” about President Trump and “settle this” at the 2020 election.

The former “Late Show” host doesn’t just disapprove of Trump’s presidency, he slammed him as a “goon” who doesn’t represent him “as an American.”

The late-night veteran, who stepped down from “Late Show” in May 2015, was very direct about his view of the president during an interview that will air on NBC’s “Sunday Today.”

“As an American, I don’t like this man as a president of our country,” Letterman told Willie Geist.

“I love being an American, but I don’t feel he represents me and I don’t like that,” he added about the man invited to his late-night show over 30 times over the years.

“Even with other presidents that I’ve disagreed with, politically, I felt like, OK, I can live with their representation, but I’m sick and tired of everybody wringing their hands about this: ‘Oh my God did you hear what he did?’ Okay let’s just settle this at the next election,” Letterman told Geist. “Let’s just stop yacking about what a goon he is.”

A recent segment of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” unearthed a clip of Trump as Letterman’s guest in 1987, speaking about his net worth.

Back in 2016, the Hillary Clinton campaign used a video clip of Letterman confronting Trump during a 2012 appearance on his show about exporting jobs to China and where his clothing was made.

The 72-year-old, who now hosts a Netflix talk show, is the longest-running late-night broadcaster in American history, with 33 years of late-night television under his belt. And after hosting over 6,000 episodes of NBC’s “Late Night” and CBS’ “Late Show,” Letterman admitted he does not miss the platform as an opportunity to slam Trump now that he is president.

“No, because first of all, the people who are in charge now do a really good job of it,” he said, referring to comedians such as Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel who, almost nightly, find a way to blast the president.

“As I’ve said before it’s like painting the Golden Gate Bridge: As soon as you’re done, you’ve got to start all over, and it would be the same night, after night, after night, after night,” Letterman added, correctly characterizing what late-night television has devolved into under the Trump presidency.

But if he still hosted “The Late Show,” Letterman told Geist he would handle Trump in a “head-on and probably inelegant” way.

“Probably really inelegant,” he said. “The worst that can happen is now you would say something for which you would have to apologize. And I would never forgive myself if I said something so ugly that somebody would say, ‘You know, you gotta apologize.’”

“You can’t apologize to this guy,” Letterman concluded.
