The Trump administration proposed a new rule Friday that would limit the government’s taxpayer-funded subsidized housing services to only bona-fide American citizens.
“There is an affordable housing crisis in this country, and we need to make certain our scarce public resources help those who are legally entitled to it,” Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson reportedly said in a statement
“Given the overwhelming demand for our programs, fairness requires that we devote ourselves to legal residents who have been waiting, some for many years, for access to affordable housing.”
The plan won immediate praise from conservatives who’ve long been critical of the federal government’s habit of wasting taxpayer money and resources to pay for the lifestyles of illegal aliens.

The left meanwhile pounced on the plan by highlighting its alleged drawbacks.
In its analysis of the proposed rule and its potential effects, HUD admitted that more than 55,000 illegal alien children could potentially wind up homeless.
As it currently stands, any low-income family can benefit from subsidized housing so long as at least one member of the family happens to be a U.S. citizen. Reportedly written by White House adviser and immigration hawk Stephen Miller, HUD’s proposed rule would instead require that every member of the family be of “eligible immigration status.”
“Approximately 25,000 households, representing about 108,000 people, now living in subsidized housing have at least one ineligible member,” The Washington Post has confirmed.
“Among these mixed-status households, 70 percent, or 76,000 people, are legally eligible for benefits — of whom 55,000 are children. … The vast majority live in California, Texas and New York.”

While 55,000 children being forced into homelessness is unfortunate, it could be argued that certain communities in California, Texas and New York brought this upon themselves by hosting sanctuary city policies that encouraged illegals to set up shop in their communities.
The right has long argued that such policies incentivize illegal immigration and thus exacerbate what is a growing crisis of illegal aliens flooding into the states and tapping into the country’s resources.
“We’ve got our own people to house and we need to take care of our citizens,” an unnamed HUD official pointed out to The Daily Caller last month. “Because of past loopholes in HUD guidance, illegal aliens were able to live in free public housing desperately needed by so many of our own citizens.”
“As illegal aliens attempt to swarm our borders, we’re sending the message that you can’t live off of American welfare on the taxpayers’ dime.”
Speaking Thursday on Fox Business Network, Carson pointed out that only one in four Americans who qualify for subsidized housing ever receive any help.
“I’m talking about legitimate American citizens, so obviously we want to get those people taken care of,” he said on FBN’s “Varney & Co.”

To be clear, HUD’s rule wouldn’t apply to legal immigrants, refugees or asylum seekers. Moreover, it’d free up 25,000+ spots for the 1 million+ Americans currently waiting for housing assistance.
According to The Washington Times, illegal immigration activists have dismissed these numbers, arguing that freeing up spots for Americans in need doesn’t justify allegedly mistreating illegals.
“[I]mmigrant-rights groups were incensed, calling the move an ‘attack’ and warning of a rise in homelessness in illegal immigrant-led families,” the Times reported.
“By stripping this basic need from families, it’s clear this administration is intent on using every avenue to stigmatize and destabilize immigrant communities,” the New York Immigration Coalition reportedly said.
The argument could be made that illegal aliens shouldn’t have “communities” within the United States. They should have “communities” at home, wherever that home may be.
And there lies the underlying point. Conservatives believe that only those foreigners who abide by America’s federal immigration laws should be allowed to call America their home. Liberal Democrats, on the other hand, seem to believe everybody should be able to call America their home.
It’s the same attitude they display toward gender. While conservatives believe as per science that men are men and women are women, liberal Democrats think it’s perfectly fine for a 300-pound man with a beard to “change his gender” to that of a woman (or something else).
But that’s not logical or sensible. Some would argue that it’s likewise not logical, sensible or fair to force the American people to subsidize the housing of illegal aliens. Just saying.
