A Republican Colorado lawmaker is warning Democrats to keep their “radical” ideas out of his home state.
Sen. Cory Gardner specifically called out 2020 presidential contender Bernie Sanders, telling “Fox & Friends” that the Vermont senator’s proposal to restore the voting rights of felons just goes “too far.”
“Democrats have come up with a lot of very radical ideas recently,” Gardner said Monday. “But this prison precinct plan is going a little bit too far.”
Sanders reiterated his position at a recent CNN town hall in New Hampshire
“I think the right to vote is inherent to our democracy,” the 2020 hopeful said. “Yes, even for terrible people.”
The senator made similar remarks at an Iowa town hall earlier this month.
“I think that is absolutely the direction we should go. You’re paying a price: You committed a crime and you’re in jail. That’s bad,” he said. “But you’re still living in American society and you have a right to vote.”

Gardner and other lawmakers are pushing back on Sanders’ plan, noting how it would restore voting rights to convicted felons such as Unabomber Ted Kaczynski, Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and Terry Nichols, an accomplice in the Oklahoma City bombing.
“They want to restore voting rights? How about the 160 lives that were lost by Terry Nichols? I’m sure they wish their lives were restored,” Gardner argued on Fox News.
The senator slammed Sanders on Twitter last week, noting the Supermax prison in his home state which holds several terrorists and unique criminals such as the attempted “shoe bomber” Richard Reid and Zacarias Moussaoui, who pleaded guilty to conspiring in the 9-11 terrorist attacks on the U.S.
The Supermax prison in Florence, CO is called the “Alcatraz of the Rockies” because it houses the worst criminals and terrorists in the country. Apparently some Democrats want to make it the next battleground precinct by giving these inmates the right to vote. #SupermaxPrecinct

Gardner followed his comments with a series of tweets featuring photos of the criminals, including Kaczynski, Nichols, and Faisal Shahzad, who was convicted after an attempt to detonate a bomb in a car near New York City’s Times Square.
He also had a message for Democrats trying to push ideas like the one Sanders has proposed on the state he represents, responding to “Fox & Friends” co-host Steve Doocy’s remarks about felons already having voting rights in Maine and Sanders’ home state of Vermont.”They can do what they want, but don’t mess with Colorado,” Gardner said, noting that extreme views from Democrats are only helping to expose their radical agendas to American voters.
“I think it makes the America people realize how far they’re willing to go, how extreme they are,” Gardener said.
