A cardinal of the Catholic Church is condemning the “false” interpretation of the Bible to promote mass migration.
The top African cardinal, who has stirred the hornet’s nest before with his conservative views, is now calling out those who use scriptures in their defense of what he likened to a “new form of slavery.”
“It is better to help people flourish in their culture than to encourage them to come to a Europe in full decadence,” Cardinal Robert Sarah told French publication Valeurs Actuelles. “It is a false exegesis to use the Word of God to promote migration. God never wanted these rifts.”
The head of the Vatican’s liturgy office criticized priests and bishops who “say fuzzy things, vague, imprecise, to escape criticism, and they marry the stupid evolution of the world.”
He called out church leaders for being more interested in political activism than spreading the message of Jesus Christ.
“If he does not teach the faith, if he enjoys activism instead of reminding people that they are made for prayer, he betrays his mission,” he said. “Jesus says, ‘I will strike the shepherd and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered.’ This is what is happening today. People no longer know who to turn to.”
Sarah, who is from Guinea and has been thought by some could one day succeed Pope Francis, warned against the church acquiescing to politicians’ acceptance of mass migration into Europe, a more traditionally Christian region.
“All migrants who arrive in Europe are penniless, without work, without dignity…This is what the Church wants?” he asked.
“The Church can not cooperate with this new form of slavery that has become mass migration. If the West continues in this fatal way, there is a great risk that, due to a lack of birth, it will disappear, invaded by foreigners, just as Rome has been invaded by barbarians,” Sarah cautioned.
“My country is predominantly Muslim. I think I know what reality I’m talking about,” he added.
Sarah’s views and his comments to Valeurs Actuelles about immigration diverge greatly from those of Pope Francis who has championed the cause of migrants and refugees, frequently urging European countries to open their borders to them.
The leader of the Roman Catholic Church, himself the son of Italian immigrants to Argentina, has often condemned President Donald Trump’s immigration stance and his policies, at one time famously calling for “bridges, not walls.”
“Builders of walls, be they made of razor wire or bricks, will end up becoming prisoners of the walls they build,” he told reporters on a trip back from Morocco on Sunday when he was questioned about Trump’s threat to shut down the U.S.-Mexico border, Reuters reported.
Francis also repeated his theme of blaming capitalism for war and poverty in an interview with Spanish journalist ahead of his trip to Morocco while condemning Trump’s proposed border wall.

But Sarah’s views contrast with the sovereign of the Vatican City State which has plenty of walls of its own.
The cardinal pointed to the example of the Catholic country of Poland which has strict immigration policies and a strong national pride which was proudly celebrated late last year in patriotic festivities marking 100 years of Polish independence. Sarah had exhorted the nation not to sacrifice its Polish and Catholic identities “on the altar of a technocratic and stateless Europe.”
“She is free to tell Europe that everyone was created by God to be placed in a specific place, with its culture, traditions, and history,” he told Valeurs Actuelles . “This current desire to globalize the world by suppressing nations, specificities, is pure madness.”
Sarah warned Europe that if it forgets its Christian heritage, it could be catastrophic.
“If Europe disappears, and with it the invaluable values of the old continent, Islam will invade the world,” he said. “And we will totally change culture, anthropology, and moral vision.”
