Sen, Kamala Harris “broke news” during a radio interview as she admitted she once smoked pot.
The California Democrat and 2020 presidential contender made her attempt to appeal to average voters as she reiterated her support for legalizing marijuana while appearing on a nationally syndicated radio program Monday.
Speaking with New York City radio station WWPR’s “The Breakfast Club,” Harris pushed back on comments by host Charlamagne Tha God.
“They say you oppose legalizing weed,” Charlamagne said.
“That’s not true,” Harris said. “And look, I joke about it, half-joke about it. Half my family’s from Jamaica. Are you kidding me?”
After a hearty laugh, the host asked the senator if she had ever tried it.
“I have. And I inhaled,” she replied, in an apparent reference to former President Bill Clinton who admitted in 1992 that he had smoked marijuana but “didn’t inhale.”
“It was a long time ago but yes. I just broke news,” Harris added, revealing that she had smoked pot in college and that “it was a joint.”
Harris declared that legalizing marijuana is “the smart thing to do and it’s the right thing to do,” announcing her support last year for a bill ending the federal marijuana ban by fellow Democrat and New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker.

Medicinal marijuana has been legalized in 33 states while 10 states have recognized and allowed the recreational use of marijuana. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and New York’s Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand – who has launched a presidential exploratory committee – have also come out in support of the bill introduced by Booker, himself a 2020 candidate, Fox News reported.
“I think that it gives a lot of people joy, we need more joy,” Harris said in the interview Monday, breaking into laughter along with the program’s host.
And while the light banter about the issue found those on the left cheering on the 2020 Democratic hopeful, plenty of others on Twitter were not seeing the humor in her comments.

I support her but I don’t agree. The worse thing CO has ever done is to legalize it. Our crime rate and homelessness rate is up. People driving down the st lighting up our accident rate is up which means our insurance rates have go up. We are not sure where the money goes
