President Donald Trump has seen a sizable shift in approval ratings for one demographic group that might surprise his critics.
An NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll released Thursday showed a 19-point swing in favor of the president among Latino voters, a significant gain especially due to the government shutdown over border wall funding.

Trump’s job approval among Latino adults was 50 percent in the new poll.

This was a marked increase from the last poll in early December in which Latino adults gave the president a 31 percent approval rating and comes as Trump has had to face a steady stream of criticism from Democrats over funding for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border which has precipitated a 4-week partial government shutdown.

While any increase is notable in itself, the 19-point shift is remarkable even as Trump faced a seven point drop with Republicans in the same time period. Latino approval numbers have shown a steady increase over the last polls, but none with the variance the latest surveys indicated.
A mid-October survey gave Trump a 27 percent job approval rating and that increased to 36 percent in the poll’s November survey.
Disapproval of Trump among Latinos saw a decrease during the last month, from 64 percent in December to 46 percent disapproval in January.
A separate question in the latest poll and one that did not appear in December’s survey asked if Trump was doing “too much, too little, or about the right amount to work with Democrats in Congress” amid the shutdown. Among Latino adults, 32 percent felt the president is doing the right amount while 50 percent of Latino voters felt he was doing too little.
Among all respondents, the poll indicated that 57 percent of those surveyed felt Trump is not doing enough to work with congressional Democrats during the shutdown, the longest one in U.S. history. But 55 percent of voters surveyed in the poll also said the Democratic lawmakers are also not doing enough to work with Trump.
Twitter users weighed in on the stunning Latino approval numbers for Trump, and the wake-up call for Democrats.
