Rep. Ro Khanna may not have gotten the latest memo from his colleagues in Congress.
The California Democrat was not only spotted on Fox News Thursday, but he also discussed the California police officer who was murdered on Christmas allegedly by an illegal immigrant. And he even advocated for the border to be secured and for migrants to “follow our process.”
The progressive Democrat from Silicon Valley spoke with Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade on the issue while discussing his state’s so-called sanctuary status and the murder of a California police officer by an illegal immigrant.
“No one is saying that our national federal agencies can’t do their job,” he said on “Fox & Friends” Thursday. “They can enforce the law. They should enforce the law.”
“What we’re saying is we shouldn’t federalize local police officers and state officers. They often have to enforce the law locally and work with people in local communities who may be undocumented to solve homicides or domestic violence cases,” he added.
“They should do their job. The feds should do their job. And it really is a federalism issue, but no one is saying that people should be harbored or should interfere in the federal government’s ability to execute the law,” the lawmaker said.
But Khanna’s response to Kilmeade’s question about whether or not sanctuary policies make communities safer seemed a bit more blurry.
“In our communities, I think they make it safer because those local police officers can work to solve local crimes and work with local communities,” he contended.
“I would not condone in any way them interfering with federal enforcement of immigration laws. And in this case the oversight was that the federal immigration laws were not enforced,” he explained.
Khanna acknowledged that border security was important but called for “reasonable policies.”
“I think that we’re a nation that attracts people from around the world,” he said. “Obviously, we need to have border security and have reasonable policies and that’s what we are debating.”
“I support immigration and I encourage people obviously to follow our process. And that’s — we’re a nation of laws. But we need a policy that secures our borders and is humane,” he added.
Khanna’s remarks got some attention on Twitter where users wondered how long he could carry on now that Rep. Nancy Pelosi has regained her title as House Speaker.
