‘I think that’s an open discussion’: Pelosi wastes no time, floats idea of indicting a sitting president

Rep. Nancy Pelosi hasn’t even picked up the gavel yet as House Speaker but she has already caused a stir by not ruling out that a sitting president can be indicted.

The California Democrat believes the issue is “open to discussion,” responding to a question by NBC’s Savannah Guthrie.

In a“Today” show interview that aired Thursday, Guthrie asked the presumptive Speaker if she thought Special Counsel Robert Meller should “honor and observe the Department of Justice guidance that states a sitting president cannot be indicted?”

“I do not think that that is conclusive. No, I do not,” Pelosi replied.

“So you think it’s possible that Special Counsel Mueller could legally indict a sitting president?” Guthrie followed up.

Pelosi circled around the question for a moment, talking about waiting on Mueller’s findings in the ongoing investigation that was supposed to be focused on alleged Russian meddling in the U.S. 2016 election.

“That is not the law,” Pelosi responded. “Everything indicates that a president can be indicted after he is no longer president of the United States.”

“A president who’s in office? Could Robert Mueller come back and say I’m seeking an indictment?” Guthrie asked.

“I think that is an open discussion,” the lawmaker replied. “I think that’s an open discussion in terms of the law.”

Pelosi also admitted that pursuing at attempt to impeach President Donald Trump would prove to be divisive for the nation.

“We’ll have to see what happens with the Mueller report,” Pelosi said. “We shouldn’t be impeaching for a political reason, and we shouldn’t avoid impeachment for a political reason.”

The Democrat lawmaker ignited stinging backlash with her insulting jab at Trump’s faith during another part of the interview when she dismissed criticism about her luxury vacation in Hawaii where she purportedly “observed the Christmas holiday” while Trump remained at the White House during the shutdown.

Pelosi’s remarks sparked heated reactions on Twitter where the Democrat was blasted for continuing to play politics in order to achieve a “pipe dream” of impeaching Trump.
