Outgoing Sen. Claire McCaskill’s continued criticism of newly elected New York congresswoman-to-be Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has not sat well with the rising 29-year-old Democrat star. In an interview earlier this month, McCaskill described Ocasio-Cortez as a “new shining object.”
“[T]here is so much drama over that New York woman, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, like she’s the new shining object,” the Missouri senator said to Bloomberg. “That’s how the media covers stuff now. And some of us are passing good old-fashioned bills, and we get nothing. Gimme a break!”
Her point was that these days the media pays attention only to the sometimes bizarre rhetoric of congressional newbies like Ocasio-Cortez. The veteran Democrats who’ve spent decades passing meaningful legislation are meanwhile ignored and relegated to the back of the bus.
“When I first got here, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch had a half-dozen reporters in Washington. Now there is one person covering the entire Congress. It’s impossible. Now it’s all about social media, the cable networks, the unedited crap,” McCaskill continued.

In another interview this weekend with CNN, McCaskill doubled down.
“I don’t know her,” she said when asked if her New York peer is a “crazy Democrat.” “I’m a little confused why she’s the thing. But it’s a good example of what I’m talking about, a bright shiny new object, came out of nowhere and surprised people when she beat a very experienced congressman.”
She also spoke briefly about her Republican peers in Congress, telling CNN that some of them secretly dislike President Donald Trump but are afraid to speak out publicly against him.
“Now they’ll tell you if it’s just the two of you, ‘The guy is nuts, he doesn’t have a grasp of the issues, he’s making rash decisions, he’s not listening to people who know the subject matter.'”
But they allegedly refuse to voice any of these concerns publicly lest it hurt them future elections.
When Ocasio-Cortez heard about these interviews, she responded via social media by crying foul.
Look:
Not sure why fmr Sen. McCaskill keeps going on TV to call me a “thing” and “shiny object,” but it’s pretty disappointing.
McCaskill promised she’d “100% back Trump up” on his anti-immigrant rhetoric & lost. In MO, almost all progressive ballot issues won. https://t.co/53qKvnr8KG

I’m also not sure why McCaskill is covering for the GOP by saying they “secretly think Trump is nuts”.
Nobody cares. Trump is melting down our institutions and inciting division between people. At any time GOP could have checked him and choose not to.
They’re accomplices.

The young congresswoman-elect was clearly offended by McCaskill’s remarks. In that case, it’d behoove her to not read the replies to her tweets, because they’ve been far more critical than anything the Missouri senator has said.
“I get it. You’re new to politics. And want to stand out. As a Democrat, you’d better pick your battles,” the top-voted reply to her second tweet reads.
“We DON’T need you or others dividing the party. How about TRYING to work with others, respect their experience & learn the process. Respect fellow women in the party.”

You are young and inexperienced, yet you have no hesitancy making enemies, even in your own party. Such a mistake, one that will probably result in your own failure. Why don’t you keep quiet and learn before you consider yourself worth hearing.Your constituents deserve better

Wow, you have a massive ego. First, it’s Senator McCaskill. 2nd, She’s not covering; she’s revealing information that further proves the GOP are accomplices. 3rd, why bash an accomplished Dem Senator who’s on her way out? How very divisive & bernie-esque.

You’re like a fucking child. Must you respond to everything? Holy fuck…..

Be Humble. You just got elected. @clairecmc worked hard for MO. We are the Show-Me State, show us through actions, not through tweets. I am sure @clairecmc wants you to succeed as much as other Dems. Don’t assume mal-intent. I did not from the @cnn piece.

Maybe you could stop the ridiculously immature tweet wars and show us what you’re doing, rather than telling us what others are doing?

Party is a big tent @Ocasio2018 stop bashing other Dems. You’ve already gone after #shariceDavids Drop #Bernie He’s leading you astray. You have a lot to learn. You have a lot of potential. Usually have great instinct on Twitter. McCaskill is right here. You’ve been here a NY min

STFU.
McCaskill has more knowledge on government in her little toe than you have if you put you + Bernard + your bearded white straight male supporters together.
Stop whining and retaliating against any criticism. You sound a whole lot like Trump.
You’re a hypocrite. pic.twitter.com/y4F1JobZwv

You didn’t win the Miss America contest. Why don’t you just be quiet for awhile. You might learn something. You tweet more than Trump!
— Vee Berlin (@vixstox) December 30, 2018
OUCH!
Considering how much Ocasio-Cortez loathes Trump, the latter two tweets must have especially hurt.
