Ocasio-Cortez calls for furlough of congressional salaries over partial government shutdown

Representative-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called for a different scenario for the next potential government shutdown: furlough congressional salaries.

The self-described Democratic socialist reacted to the partial government shutdown in the wake of disagreements over border wall funding in an angry tweet on Saturday.

“It’s completely unacceptable that members of Congress can force a government shutdown on partisan lines & then have Congressional salaries exempt from that decision,” she lashed out on Twitter. “Have some integrity.”

Essential federal services pertaining to national security and health continue to operate during a government shutdown and any furloughed employees who don’t get paid generally receive back pay once the shutdown is over, though this is not guaranteed, according to Fox Business.

But Congressional lawmakers are not subject to furlough and President Donald Trump cannot be denied a salary at any time he is in office.

Ocasio-Cortez sparked a heated debate on social media as some Twitter users surprised themselves by actually agreeing with the freshman lawmaker.

Others debated the wisdom of having Congress held accountable in this way.
