Baltimore’s new gun buyback program may be having some unintended consequences.
As the Baltimore City Police Department launched its program, boasting more than 500 firearms surrendered on Monday, it seems not all participants had the same goals as evidenced by one woman who planned to use the cash to buy a bigger gun, WBFF reported.

WBFF Baltimore journalist, Kathleen Cairns, reported on the woman who was turning in a 9mm gun and “says she is using the cash to get a bigger weapon!”

The woman named Darlene can be seen discussing her plans in the quick video below:
Any firearm or high-capacity magazines were being accepted by police who offered anywhere from $25 to $500 in the exchange, depending on the item.
“Our point here is, there are guns on the streets of our city. We are signaling folks out there, we don’t care if its grandpa’s gun or your gun, we want it,” Mayor Catherine Pugh told WBFF.

The program was announced last week by Pugh and Interim Police Commissioner Gary Tuggle in an effort to “get the guns off of our streets,” despite a lack of evidence that buyback programs are effective in reducing violent crimes. In fact, a murder in west Baltimore on Wednesday marked the city’s 300th homicide, the fourth year in a row that the rate has been at least 300.
The shooting happened following a second Gun Buy Back event staged by Baltimore City police Wednesday. Even some who participated in the effort were not optimistic about its outcome.
“They don’t reduce crime, they don’t reduce gun violence. They don’t work,” one seller, Alonzo Plento, told WBFF, speaking of the program which will reportedly cost the city $250,000.

Some residents revealed they participated in the buyback program to get the much needed cash, others just to clean out the old clutter in their homes.
And with Baltimore’s high number of homicides and violent crimes, it seems many applauded the plans of the woman who intended to get a bigger gun.
What a PERFECT use of the buyback program! Especially if the reimbursement is more than the value of a the gun being bought back. With today’s rampant crime, you need to make sure your guns are in perfect condition. Thanks for sharing.
