Newt Gingrich absolutely shreds Mueller probe: It’s not an investigation, it’s a ‘Trump destruction project’

Special counsel Robert Mueller’s prosecution of former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn for a “process crime” has led some, including former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, to theorize that the investigation into alleged Russian collusion truly is a witch hunt against the president.

“You have to understand Mueller is not involved in an investigation,” he said Wednesday evening to Fox News host Sean Hannity. “Mueller has a Trump destruction project.”

“He brought on a team, all of them dedicated to destroying Trump. They have done everything they could to destroy Trump. And part of that technique … is you throw the kitchen sink.”

“You basically threaten somebody and say I’m going to bankrupt you, I’m going to put your son in jail. I am going to charge you with so many different crimes you will never get out from under it. Now would you like to talk?” he added, essentially describing Mueller’s treatment of Flynn.

The former national security adviser began cooperating with the special counsel last year after he reportedly grew concerned that prosecutors might attempt to file serious criminal charges against his son, Michael Flynn Jr., who’d previously served as his chief of staff.

He eventually pleaded guilty to lying to federal authorities, though the evidence suggests he never actually lied. He pleaded otherwise presumably out of fear that Mueller might target his son.

“And when you have the full power of the federal government against you, it’s pretty tough not to try to find a way to get him off your back. But it has nothing to do with the truth. It has nothing to do with justice,” Gingrich continued.

“Historians some day will comment that this was one of the most extraordinary efforts to undo the will of the American people by an established bureaucracy and its establishment friends that we have seen in all of American history.”

The former House speaker is among a plethora of conservatives who believe the investigation into Russian collusion — that for the record has uncovered no collusion thus far — was launched as part of a concerted effort to roll back the results of the 2016 presidential election.

The efforts reportedly began when the Obama administration used a since-discredited “intelligence” dossier filled with dubious claims about President Donald Trump to obtain a FISA warrant against members of his 2016 election campaign team.

According to the latest reports, the administration knew from day one that the dossier — which was prepared on behalf of the Democrat National Committee and then-Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton — was fraudulent but chose to utilize it as justification for a FISA warrant anyway.

“We knew they didn’t verify the dossier and it was not corroborated … but now we see an email chain with all of these people’s names in it that shows they knew there were credibility problems with the bulk of evidence that was used to obtain the FISA warrants,” Hannity explained.

“And they withheld all that information from the judges.”

The emails obtained and released by John Solomon of The Hill this week show that officials as high up as then-FBI Director James Comey all participated in the purported FISA warrant scam.

“How can they get away with that abuse of power?”  Hannity then asked.

“Well, because they’re the establishment,” the former House speaker replied. “They’re the fix. They’re the insiders. … They all thought Hillary was going to win. They never thought this was going to come to light. They thought they were helping the winner.”

But when their desired winner became the loser instead, they felt compelled to switch strategies.

“You had the director of the FBI actively trying to destroy a presidential candidate. You have the former head of the FBI, Bob Mueller, actively trying to destroy the president of the United States,” he said.

“And I know it’s frustrating, but the fact is … they hate him, they want to destroy him. It has nothing to do with the truth and nothing to do with the law.”
