‘Shut up & step-up’ Sen says it’s hard for Dems to connect to voters. We need ‘to tell everyone how smart we are’

Sen. Mazie Hirono thinks she has figured out why Democrats have a hard time connecting with voters and it has to do with their brains.

The Hawaii Democrat believes the problem with her party capturing the minds of voters stems from the fact that Democrats just “know so much.”

Hirono was asked about how Democrats can get voters to understand the importance of judicial appointments during the “Bend Towards Justice” conference in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday.

“I wish I had the answer to that because one of the things that we, Democrats, have a really hard time is connecting to people’s hearts instead of here,” Hirono, pointing to her head, replied to journalist Dahlia Lithwick.

“We’re really good at shoving out all the information that touch people here,” she said pointing to her head, “but not here,” she added as she pointed to her heart.

“I’ve been saying at all our Senate Democratic retreats we need to speak to the heart, not in a manipulative way, not in a way that brings forth everybody’s fears and resentments, but truly to speak to the hearts so that people know that we’re actually on their side,” the 71-year-old continued.

“But we have a really hard time doing that and one of the reasons– it was told to me at one of our retreats– was that we Democrats know so much, that is true. And we have kind of have to tell everyone how smart we are and so we have a tendency to be very left brain,” she added.

Hirono, a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, was very vocal about her opposition to the confirmation of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Infamously telling men they had to “shut up and step up” during the confirmation process earned the Democrat a scathing rebuke from actor James Woods who labeled her a “sexist witch.”

She also came under fire for using the sexual assault allegations against Kavanaugh as a fundraising tool in her campaign.

Hirono’s remarks about how smart Democrats are sparked a collective eye roll on social media as Twitter users struggled to take her seriously.
