An American flag survived the recent California wildfires and two police officers are now intent on finding its original owner.
Officers Katie Cooley and Julius Lewis of the Elk Grove Police Department said they came upon a row of houses burned beyond recognition, but saw an American flag intact.
Our officers were driving down one street where every house had been leveled, nothing left, except a flag pole that was standing with flag in almost perfect condition. Our officers documented the address and secured the flag in hopes to return it to the owners one day. #CampFire pic.twitter.com/JDiOWnwqD7

“We were on calls for service and we were driving down a small street that had all of the houses had been burned — every house on the street,” Cooley said on “Fox & Friends” Tuesday. “We were checking on one residence when my partner, Officer Lewis, across the street noticed a flag pole standing with the flag attached to it.”
“It definitely caught my attention. It was pretty amazing to see,” Lewis replied. “The house in the backdrop was completely burned to the ground. Yet the flag was still there.”
“I actually took a photo of it sitting in the vehicle because I just sat there for a while looking at it,” he added.
Cooley said after the situation in California calms down, she and her partner plan to find the original owner to return the flag.
“Once the situation stabilizes in Paradise and things calm down a little bit, we’ll try to work with the city there and public records or however we can do that and try to locate the owners. We documented the address and we will try to find out who its rightful owner is,” she said.
Lewis likened the scene of the wildfires to “Armageddon” and said pictures and video can’t do the situation justice.
“It really is something that pictures and video can’t really explain it. Like being there, it was really eerie — felt like something kind of like ‘Armageddon,’” he replied. “It felt special but still very somber at the same time. It was a sobering experience. It was unbelievable.”
