Residents of a Tennessee town are furious after a dummy with Rep. Marsha Blackburn’s name was found hanging from a tree.
The controversial figure wearing a dunce cap and a sign with an “X” over the name “Marsha” was found hanging from a tree in Shelbyville, WZTV-FOX 17 reported.
“It was very disturbing to see a human-like object hanging from a tree,” Shelbyville resident Bill Grimes told the station. “It’s an intimidating message they’re sending.”
Blackburn, a Republican, is running against former Gov. Phil Bredesen, a Democrat, in a tight race for Republican Sen. Bob Corker’s Senate seat.
“My heart, when I saw that, the first thing, there’s a school down that road and we’re showing our kids hatred,” Sandy Still, Bedford County’s GOP chair, said.
Still shared photos of the purported Halloween display on Facebook, showing the effigy with a plastic pumpkin-bucket for a head.
“I didn’t want the children or the school to have to see that type of thing,” Grimes added about the effigy with the letters “GOP” and signs hanging below reading “Stop the Hate.”
The owners of the property where the effigy was hung said they did not know about it as they do not live in the area, according to WZTV.
Apparently violence is not a new thing for the left as the GOP chair recounted it’s not the first time something like this has happened.
“It happened in the Romney/Ryan election. They had him hanging in the tree covered in red paint and signs on there with slashes through it, that kind of thing. And then Trump, we had the same thing hanging there,” Still said.
She lamented the current political climate that allows for hateful acts like this.
“To me, it says we can’t settle our differences when we’re civil to each other, that we have to put up hateful things to scare and intimidate people,” Still said.
“We need to give each other room and respect other people’s opinion,” Grimes added.
