Ana Navarro bashes First Lady, gushes over ‘progressive’ Andrew Gillum, but insists she’s a ‘real’ Republican

CNN’s Ana Navarro appropriately took her political routine to Comedy Central where she emphatically professed that she is still a Republican.

The CNN commentator weighed in on the Republican Party during an appearance on “The Daily Show” Wednesday, insisting she is an authentic member of the party.

“You know, here’s the thing… I was a Republican when Donald Trump was a Democrat,” Navarro responded to host Trevor Noah’s question about her party affiliation.

Navarro insisted that she’s been a Republican all along, while President Trump only ‘pretends’ to be.

“I was a Republican when Donald Trump was an Independent. And I’m a Republican now that he’s pretending to be a Republican and so many other Republicans are enabling him and allowing him to pretend,” she said, claiming there has been a “shift in the base.”

But her words were a strong contrast from her views as she proceeded to criticize President Trump and the GOP, beginning with a jab at First Lady Melania Trump.

“Since it’s Halloween, I thought I’d come dressed as a First Lady who really does care,” Navarro told the Miami audience as she appeared wearing an “I Really Care, Do You?” jacket.

Navarro spoke “as a Republican” about the Florida gubernatorial race between Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis and Democrat Tallahassee mayor Andrew Gillum.

“For me, I’m a a centrist. I’m a moderate Republican, I’m a centrist,” Navarro responded to Noah’s question about the Florida race.

“So when I look at that race, on the one hand, I’ve got Ron DeSantis who is increasingly – forget increasingly, he’s not an option,” Navarro said. “And on the other hand, I’ve got Andrew Gillum who is a progressive Democrat, who is much further to the left than I am on policy issues.”

The CNN pundit explained that she had just met Gillum for the first tine a few days before.

“I met him a couple of days ago, and I got to tell you something. Part of the reason that guy is awakening something is because he’s likable,” she told Noah.  “I had forgotten what it was like to have a likable person running in Florida and I hope Florida voters reject a campaign of fearmongerring and scare tactics. We can’t fall for that again.”

Although, “as a Republican,” Navarro did not endorse Gillum outright, she certainly didn’t seem to give DeSantis her unwavering support, insisting that if the congressman does in fact win the race for governor, he is not only  “indebted” to Trump, the president “owns the guy.”
