Even though both the GOP and President Donald Trump are currently enjoying record approval and favorability ratings, for some inexplicable reason former Secretary of State Colin Powell appears to believe that the president and his Republican cohorts in Congress are destroying America.
“We used to be the leader of the world that wanted to be free. In recent years, the pressures and the forces that Madeleine talked about has come into play. They’ve come into play,” he said on a “Fareed Zakaria GPS” panel with former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright that aired Sunday.
Listen to the first part below:
Speaking before him, Albright had complained about the rise in patriotic nationalism and populism, both of which had played a role in spurring Trump’s success and were also responsible for the Brexit movement in the U.K.
“And what are we doing? We’re walking away from agreements; we’re walking away from the alliances, frankly, that we used to have,” Powell continued, apparently taking issue with the president’s decision to renegotiate deals with other countries.
Just last month the president renegotiated a new trade deal, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, to replace the outdated North American Free Trade Agreement. Thanks to the new deal, the United States now enjoys greater access to the Canadian dairy market.
“President goes to Europe to a NATO meeting, but he starts out by insulting some of the other participants, our allies,” Powell continued. “And so, America has to take a hard look at itself, and especially the Congress. Take a hard look at yourself, and see what we are doing to try to keep these forces in check and put America back in the middle of all this.”
It’s unclear what he meant by trying “to keep these forces in check.” Actions taken by the Trump administration have helped weaken the Islamic State, reduce North Korean aggression and temper Syrian dictator Bashir Assad’s cruelty toward his people.
Listen to the second part below:
Powell then pivoted his attention to the drama last year in Charlottesville — where a feud between white supremacists and left-wing thugs had led to the death of an innocent protester — and argued that Trump is enabling the “forces that are pulling us apart” to grow stronger. This was a left-wing talking point based on the false assertion that the president condones white supremacy.
The former secretary of state never issued similar criticism about former President Barack Obama presidency, and this despite polls having shown that Obama had exacerbated racial tensions.
When Zakaria then asked Powell whether Trump can be a moral leader for the world, he essentially replied with no, saying that though his three favorite words in the Constitution are “we the people,” as of late “it has become ‘me the president.'”
“And you see things that should not be happening,” he said. “How can a president of the United States get up and say that the media is the enemy of Americans? Hasn’t he read the First Amendment? You are not supposed to like everything the press says, or what anyone says… that’s why we have a First Amendment, to protect that kind of speech.”
Just like with every other assertion made by the former Bush administration official, he seemed to be viewing issues through the lens of liberal bias. In this case he just skipped over the media’s demonstrable bias and hatred for the president.
Powell concluded his diatribe by expressing his hope that the president learns to stop insulting people. Perhaps the former secretary of state could first learn to follow his own advice?
Social media’s reaction to his rhetoric was not pleasant, ranging from some calling him a war criminal to others blasting him for being a globalist shill and defending the current president’s record.

Ok, we get it. He doesn’t like Trump. After he endorsed Obama, that ruined him. Bitter.

Colin Powell: a never-trump republican before never-trump republicanism was even a glimmer in @BillKristol eye.

To be honest the American people are sick of paying for NATO, and others countries living on our dime.

They weren’t in the interest of the United States. Pandering to despots, unfair trade agreements signal fear. In Trump we have a leader and negotiator who is not afraid to up-end the apple cart to get it right. At least half the country supports him.
