‘None of you should be proud’: Grassley explodes on reporters for biased Kavanaugh coverage

Sen. Chuck Grassley chastised the media for their “bias” as he unloaded his frustration about the nomination process for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh during a press conference.

The Senate Judiciary Chairman slammed reporters for their coverage over recent days as allegations against Kavanaugh devolved the confirmation process into chaos.

“What I’d like to do when we get all done, because this is almost rock bottom, I would like to have the future mending things so we can do things in a collegial way that the United States Senate ought do and particularly when it comes to Supreme Court nominations. And you folks can have something to do with this,” Grassley said at a press conference Thursday with several Republican Judiciary members.

“Now I would never use the word fake news. I consider you folks policemen for our democratic system of government. But I want to show you where some of you have bias. I have had demonstrators in my office for two weeks now, both for Kavanaugh and against Kavanaugh,” he continued.

“One time the people that were for Kavanaugh wanted to be interviewed and they said, ‘we only — we are only interested in interviewing people against Kavanaugh.’ Now, is that — that’s a bias that none of you should be proud of,” he added.

Earlier, Grassley had expressed that he felt “very good” about Kavanaugh’s nomination and his qualifications to serve on the high court.

“I feel very good about where this nomination is right now,” he said. “I don’t say that from the standpoint of counting votes. I say that from the standpoint of the qualifications of this candidate.”

But he was clear that, with 87 days into the process – three weeks longer than it took to confirm the last three or four nominees to the Supreme Court – an extensive amount of time had been invested.

“So don’t tell me we haven’t spent enough time,” he said.

Grassley lamented the fact that months ago, the process began to go downhill when Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Democrats would “do everything” to stop Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

“Now, this started downhill very quickly on about July 10th when Schumer said that we’re going to do everything we can to stop this nomination. And you can look back 87 days and you can see that everything but whether he’s qualified to serve has been brought up,” he said.

“We have had a fair and thorough process,” the Iowa Republican added.

“But what I have been dealing with since July 10th, the downhill slope that Schumer’s put us on, is really dealing with a demolition derby. They just about destroyed a good person, to be on the Supreme Court,” Grassley said.

The press conference came hours after Senators were able to review the FBI’s supplemental report into the allegations levied against Kavanaugh. Senate Majority Mitch McConnell filed a cloture motion and a final vote is expected on Saturday.
