Newly released British activist Tommy Robinson revealed the horrific physical and psychological abuse he was subjected to in a UK prison.
The independent journalist, who was imprisoned since May, lost 40 pounds behind bars before his release on Wednesday. He spoke to Ezra Levant of Rebel Media about his shocking ordeal in his first sit-down interview since being freed.
At the trial of four Muslim men accused of raping a teenage girl, Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Christopher Yaxley-Lennon, was arrested for reporting and recording outside of the court.
He told Levant how he was moved to a majority Muslim prison where he had to stay inside his cell, forced to keep his windows closed because people would spit or throw feces through the window.
As an outspoken critic of Islam, Robinson was told he was being kept in solitary confinement for his own safety but believes he was purposely placed in the “most densely Muslim populated prison in the country.”
Concerns about Muslim inmates who were preparing his meals, the 35-year-old survived on fruit and five cans of tuna per week. His requests for the prison to raise the £12 per week food spending limit to allow him to have more packaged food were denied, he said.
Robinson was not only worried about himself within the prison walls but also his wife and children whom he was only allowed to see twice during his imprisonment, and only for an hour.
He revealed to Fox News’ Tucker Carlson that at one point, he was told that, “‘police are on the way to your house because there’s intel there will be acid attacks against your wife.”
“All I’d done was read a BBC news article, a BBC news article that is still online now for millions of people to see. And I was taken and everyone would’ve watched the video, they said for a breach of the peace,” Robinson said on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” Thursday after his release.
“They transported me to a police custody and then my solicitor contacted the police custody. Then they emailed my solicitor, my solicitor has this email, saying I was being released. Then they took me in a van back to the court through the back door and put me up before a judge,” he recalled the chilling details.
“At no point was I even asked whether I was guilty or not guilty. I was not even told, and I still to this point have not been told and don’t know what it is I am deemed to have done wrong. In a British court of law, for a fair trial for anyone, they have to understand what they are being accused of,” he continued.
Levant, who has documented the case since Robinson’s arrest and whose site crowdfunded for his legal fees, said it was “glorious to see him reunited with his beautiful wife and three lovely children,” but was shocked by the details of the imprisonment.
“As I listened, my joy turned to sorrow, and then to rage,” Levant wrote. “If he were to have stayed in prison much longer, I fear his very life would have been in danger.”
Robinson, co-founder, spokesman and leader of the English Defence League as well as a former member of the British National Party, was sentenced to 13 months’ imprisonment in May, sparking outrage and protests demanding his release. Though his appeal was successful as he was released on bail Wednesday, Robinson could still face a retrial and be sent back to prison.
