GOP should make vote for speaker a referendum on party establishment, says DCNF’s Chris Bedford

Editor-in-chief of The Daily Caller News Foundation Chris Bedford said the Republican party should use the next vote for House Speaker to create a referendum on the GOP establishment Thursday on “Lou Dobbs Tonight.”

Bedford said Republicans should mimic what Democrats did with former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and demand a more conservative candidate be put in charge.

“The midterms elections are a base election,” Bedford said. “That’s when the hard core people come out. What if the Republican party or conservatives say ‘this is a referendum on Paul Ryan or Kevin McCarthy — or do you want Jim Jordan?’ Like the hard left has done with Democrats.”

“They say ‘do you want Nancy Pelosi or do you want to go farther to the left?’ Maybe that would be a motivating factor and maybe that would put someone like Jim Jordan into a leadership position.” Jordan announced his run for Speaker on Thursday.

Bedford said Jordan’s prospects to become speaker are “not great right now,” but predicted a close battle in the House between House majority leader Kevin McCarthy of California and possibly House majority WHIP Steve Scalise of Louisiana.

“I suspect that there will be a fight,” he concluded. “If they had this locked up already they would have called a snap election and McCarthy or Scalise would be Speaker.”
