Another fine example of American tax dollars at work was uncovered in California after a state audit.
An employee of the California Department of Motor Vehicles cost taxpayers more than $40,000 over nearly four years by slacking and sleeping on the job, Fox News reported.
The unnamed employee allegedly slept three hours a day on the job between February 2014 and December 2017, an estimated 2,200 hours’ worth of work, according to a state auditor’s report released Tuesday.
The worker, a data operator who should have averaged 560 documents a day while updating information on address changes and new vehicle ownership forms, only completed 200 a day, according to the report which noted that others had to pick up the slack.
Colleagues also revealed in the report that the employee’s work was usually filled with mistakes.
Supervisors, who knew what was happening, still “failed to take disciplinary or medical action against the employee after initial efforts to address her conduct proved unsuccessful,” the audit reported.
According to Fox News:
In November 2016, the worker’s request for reasonable accommodation was denied. Two months later, the worker’s physician indicated she could “perform all of her duties.”
DMV officials told state auditors that they did not pursue disciplinary action against the worker because her behavior had not been properly documented.
Previous disciplinary attempts were found by legal and human resources staff to have not had “appropriate language necessary for such disciplinary action,” the audit said.
The employee was reportedly finally warned of disciplinary action for sleeping on the job after proper documentation was completed in March 2018.
A recommendation was made by the state auditors that the DMV should take action against the supervisors for failing to discipline the employee.
And this is not the only case of misuse of taxpayer dollars.
The case of the snoozing employee is only one of 1,481 incidents involving alleged improper activities by government employees investigated by the California State Auditor’s Office over the past year.
This one employee, along with three others at state offices “misused state time and cost the State approximately $160,000,” the audit reported.
