Rand Paul makes a strong defense for Trump’s ‘extraordinary’ Putin presser: ‘He should be lauded not belittled’

Rand Paul wasn’t about to toe the line of the mainstream media and their Democrat cohorts and pile on Trump’s handling of a press conference Monday with Vladimir Putin.

Paul even defied many Republicans when he stated that Trump “should be lauded not belittled’ for taking extraordinary measures to reach out to America’s adversaries.

CBS This Morning‘s Gayle King set up the question by mentioning the hammering President Trump has been taking from the media over the joint press conference.

“Thank you for joining us. Listen, you’ve heard the avalanche of criticism and negativity, appalling, shameful, disgraceful, shocking. It’s coming from all sides, and I’m wondering, you’re here this morning. Are you doing a cleanup on aisle three?” King began.

Paul, who has been supportive of Trump’s meeting with Putin all along, wasted no time firing away in defense of the president.

“Well, you know, I think we ought to take a step back and look at the bigger picture and decide whether or not we want to have conversations with even our adversaries. During the height of the cold War, during the Cuban missile crisis, Kennedy had a direct line to khrushchev, and I think the world is a safer and much better place because we had that line of communication. We had ambassadors to —” began before being cut off.

If you’re going to ask questions, let me finish” Paul shot back before continuing.

“It was also I think a good idea that we continue to have ambassadors and diplomatic relations with Russia, even though they are our adversary.”

King tried to claim that no one was objecting to having a good relationship with Russia, but that the backlash was coming from Trump throwing the intel community “under the bus.”

Paul wasn’t buying it.

“Actually, I think that’s incorrect,” Paul said. “Every Democrat on Capitol Hill objected to him meeting with Putin. Every warmonger on the right objected. So yes, the bipartisan consensus said you shouldn’t meet with Putin. They also said you shouldn’t meet with Kim.

“This is an extraordinary thing about President Trump that should be lauded and not belittled, that he is willing to meet with adversaries to try to prevent us from having world War 3.”

Paul continued to defend the President under the grilling of King until he brought up the part of Russian collusion the media ignores.

“I think what this gets into is that the President has undergone an onslaught of a year, a year and a half of a partisan investigation accusing him of somehow colluding with the Russians. So I think he’s sensitive to that.

“We all have now concluded and all understand that the investigation was started by partisans, James Clapper and John Brennan, who started the investigation at the behest of the Clinton campaign, who paid somebody in Russia to come up with a dossier. So really, it’s funny that we keep talking about Trump and Russia, when in fact the only person actually known to pay Russian agents was Hillary Clinton who paid a British spy who then paid British agents who concocted dirt on Trump.”

When King tried to reel Paul back in, he fired off an insult at Clapper.

“One of the reasons for it is James Clapper’s a known liar who’s lied to Congress, so that’s why you have this problem.”

Trump thanked Rand Paul for his support:
