A conservative radio host stormed off an HLN set over a “preposterous statement” made by another panelist in discussing potential Supreme Court nominees.
During a panel discussion on HLN on Friday about personal morals on the Supreme Court, Steve Deace had enough and angrily stormed out following a remark by Sirius XM radio host Dean Obeidallah.
Discussing President Trump’s second Supreme Court appointee, Obeidallah said the stakes were high because of the potential of reversing Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision that legalized abortion nationwide.
“The stakes are really high in this country,” Obeidallah said. “And there are people who want to impose Christian Sharia law in this country. And what I mean by that is that they want the Bible as the law of the land. Mike Huckabee has literally said ‘you can’t change the Bible but you can change the Constitution.'”
When Deace got a chance to respond, he pushed back on Obeidallah’s comments on “Christain Sharia law” and called out anchor Carol Costello for not doing the same.
“Here is the thing. So, I came on here to have an earnest conversation. I’ve been happily on here in the past and we’ve had one,” Deace said. “You started with me, and I tried to have a conversation where we might get to a place of agreement. Right away, you go to Dean after me. He basically says people with my world view are — what do you call us? Christian Sharia law advocates.”
“There are people on the right who want to impose Christian Sharia law in this country,” Obeidallah insisted.
“Christian Sharia law in this context is simply shorthand for turning religious beliefs into the laws of the land,” he said. “I’m not going through the Bible. To me that’s what sharia is in the Muslim world, what sharia is here. I’m not sure why you’d be upset unless you’re advocating it. I’m not suggesting you are.”
“I can play this game too,” Deace responded.
“You guys in the media don’t play referee when this stuff happens. And this is why a lot of conservatives like me don’t come on shows like this. Because we get set up to be foils — we get set up to be straw men. But here was an attempt I tried to have a legitimate conversation, and it’s already over,” he concluded.
Costello apologized to Deace for not challenging Obeidallah’s remarks but Deace had had enough.
He promptly removed his microphone and walked off the set, leaving the other three on camera visibly stunned for a moment.
“But I’m sad you’re gone, Steve. I wish you would come back,” Costello said, trying to regain control of the segment. “I’m sad you walked off. I respect your opinions and I think it’s vital you continue to appear on this program. Let’s continue our conversation. And I will try to play the part of Steve as best I can.”
Obeidallah continued to defend his remarks on the air, mockingly suggesting he and Deace “can be Facebook friends.”
“He can follow me on Twitter,” he said. “It’s too bad for Steve. He doesn’t like the truth.”
He later took to Twitter to put the heat on Deace.
Well this was a first! I was just on @HLNTV with anchor @CarolHLN and the conservative on got so mad at me for saying there are people on right who want Christian sharia law That he WALKED OFF the interview on live tv. The truth is there are those who want Christian sharia!

Deace later posted the video explaining why he left the panel discussion.

“Judge for yourself whether I acted properly or not,” he wrote.
