American airmen could be outnumbered 4-to-1 by undocumented minors at Goodfellow Air Force Base in Texas if government plans to house these children are approved.
About 5,500 military personnel live on base and there could soon be more than 20,000 unaccompanied minors who illegally crossed the border living there too.
A request was filed on June 20 by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) at the expense of the Department of Defense (DoD) for Goodfellow and Fort Bliss — which might have to house at least another 12,000 misplaced, illegal families — to accommodate the growing need for shelter for undocumented people caused by the massive immigration crisis at the southwest border.
The DoD has 45 days to prepare its facilities to meet HHS standards, and the department needs to be ready to adequately house 2,000 immigrants immediately, or it must construct new facilities, Military Times reported.
The Economy Act — which controls funding of salary and benefits for all government employees — assures that the DoD will be reimbursed for all costs, according to The Washington Post.
The daily operations of caring for these undocumented and unaccompanied minors will be overseen by HHS employees or those in contract with HHS. Provision includes “supervision, meals, clothing, medical services, transportation or other daily needs, and HHS representatives will be at each location,” reported WaPo.
There is no conclusive figure mentioned for how much this would cost the federal government.
