Fox News’ Stirewalt is unimpressed: Ocasio-Cortez ‘one of the most overrated politicians in America’

Liberals may be fawning over Democratic congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, but Chris Stirewalt is not so impressed.

The Fox News politics editor thinks all the hype surrounding the young socialist is quickly making her the “most overrated politicians in America.”

Ocasio-Cortez burst into the spotlight last week after defeating 19-year congressional veteran Rep. Joseph Crowley in the Democrat primary for New York’s 14th congressional district. Her inexperience and young age were not an issue for the 28-year-old Democratic Socialist whose charisma caused her lipstick shade to sell out at makeup stores as fans clamored to follow her lead.

Being touted as the rising voice of the Democratic Party, whether they like it or not, Ocasio-Cortez is firing up voters who naturally love her push for government-funded everything. DNC Chairman Tom Perez even praised her as the “future of the party.”

Stirewalt gave Perez “a little more credit” as he spoke with Fox News’ Shannon Bream Tuesday, noting that the DNC chairman was trying to “suck up” to people “across the board” in order to please Democratic congressmen and governors who are his “real constituency.”

“I’m sure what he’s saying is, ‘She is the future and so are you, and everybody’s the future. And together we’ll have moonbeams and rainbows and sunshine and everything will be great,’” Stirewalt said. “You know, that’s just some stuff people say.”

He then turned to the hype surrounding Ocasio-Cortez.

“I don’t want to be uncharitable to the Democratic nominee, but I would say that she is quickly becoming one of the most overrated politicians in America,” Stirewalt said.

“And it’s like that because of the hype. And it’s not her fault. The hype around her is astonishing. I can’t believe what I’m hearing… She’s 28 years old!” he continued.

“And by the way, to take nothing away from the shoe leather that she used – and she showed her actual shoes – how hard she worked to beat Crowley, New York is not a justly and orderly run state from a political point of view. It is machine politics in a big way,” Stirewalt contended. “Joe Crowley should have been bounced out of that seat by somebody a long time ago, but he used the power of incumbency and the fact that, you know how many people voted in the primary? Like none. Like 25,000 people voted in that primary.”

Stirewalt noted that. although he takes nothing away from Ocasio-Cortez’s victory, “she is going to be one of 435 members of Congress.”

“She’s getting a lot of attention right now. But she’ll never live up to it,” he said.
