As Democrats swing into offense to block President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand raised the alarm that a reshaped court would “criminalize women.”
“This is a line that’s been drawn about whether we are going to criminalize women — whether we are going to be arresting women for making decisions about their bodies. This is not a fire drill. This is not a hypothetical case,” the New York Democrat said at a rally in Washington on Thursday.
Democrats have been stoking the fire on the possibility that Trump’s pick of another conservative judge on the Court could jeopardize Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court case that legalized abortion in the United States. Although the president has not yet named a replacement for outgoing Justice Anthony Kennedy, who announced his retirement earlier this week, liberals have used Roe v. Wade to sound the alarm over the impending nomination.
Although it is not clear how a pro-life judge could lead to the Supreme Court wanting to “criminalize women,” liberals seem intent on creating the emotional panic in the base in order to push the narrative.
“This is a battle line that has been drawn that literally will put women’s lives at risk, that undermines our civil rights, our human rights,” Gillibrand said at the rally that also featured speeches by New Jersey’s Sen. Cory Booker and Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts.
Gillibrand pressed her point in an interview on MSNBC Friday, telling Chris Hayes that Trump is “literally trying to punish women” with his new Supreme Court pick.
“This is really a question of do you value women in this country, do you want to protect women in this country?” she said, calling the issue one of the “civil right of all women in America.”
“President Trump told the American people I intend to overturn Roe v. Wade,” she declared. “He doesn’t value women so every woman and man in America who cares about women’s reproductive freedom and the ability of women to make their own judgments about their own body should speak out and defeat whoever the next nominee is.”
Gillibrand then declared as fact that Trump has “put together his list specifically to find someone who will undermine women’s choices.”
“The also want to criminalize abortion in this country,” she added, again touting her views as fact. “They are literally trying to punish women.”
Like her Democratic colleagues, the New York Senator then called on a mobilization of opposition to block whoever the nominee is – simply because Trump is picking the candidate.
“If every senator hears from their constituents loudly clearly with personal stories and outrage and concern they might change their minds. That’s how democracy works. That’s what democracy looks like,” she said. “It’s unconscionable what this president is trying to do and I don’t think this is fair and right and I think people should fight more than they’ve fought before.”
