Meadow, Jordan’s bill to force DOJ to hand over docs passes; puts Rosenstein on notice

House lawmakers passed a measure House Freedom Caucus (HFC) leadership put forth Thursday that demands the Department of Justice hand over sensitive, and what they believe to be critical, documents related to a court-approved surveillance of an aide to President Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.

“Enough is enough. Give us the documents we are entitled to have,” HFC co-founder Jim Jordan said on the House floor before the vote. “Let’s have the full weight of the House behind a resolution saying you got seven days to get your act together.”

The non-binding resolution puts senior DOJ leadership on notice. Meadows and House conservatives have already let Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein know they have him in their sights, drafting eight articles of impeachment against Rosenstein in late April.

Rosenstein was coincidentally, or not, called in to testify before the House Committee on the Judiciary at the same time members were voting on GOP Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina and Jordan’s measure that would force his hands in complying with their now year-long campaign to get the DOJ to hand over documents related to potential Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act abuses on the part of the Obama administration.

Conservatives have repeatedly requested documents related to surveillance of Trump campaign aide Carter Page, as well as text messages between FBI special agent Peter Strzok and FBI counsel Lisa Page whose text messages show they had an anti-Trump bias and wanted to stop Trump from winning the election and other related matters.

Moderates and Democrats believe this is a ploy on the part of conservatives to either tee up Trump to fire Rosenstein or a move to signal they are serious about moving forward with impeachment.

Speaker of the House Paul Ryan told reporters Tuesday that he expects the DOJ to comply with House Republicans requests “very soon,” but did not say whether or not he plans to get involved again in the matter.
